The elevation of Boulder is over 5,300 feet. Breathtaking views of rocky peaks and rolling hills surround Boulder. Whether you’re into hiking, biking, or just enjoying a picnic with a view, Boulder’s landscape offers an endless playground for adventures. I was only there for three days and couldn’t fit everything into my schedule.
The city itself is a blend of modern living and respect for nature, with a friendly vibe that makes everyone feel welcome. While there, I felt the serenity of the mountains yet was close to the amenities I enjoy in a larger city.

Boulder–The College Town
Because Boulder is a college town, you’ll find many popular hotels within walking distance of the University of Colorado Boulder campus.
The University of Colorado Boulder campus (commonly called CU Boulder) isn’t located in downtown Boulder but is very close to it. The university is approximately a mile southwest of downtown, making it easily accessible from there. The campus is known for its beautiful architecture and picturesque views of the Flatirons, the striking rock formations that are a signature of the landscape.
By the Way – The Flatirons are called that because the term “Flatirons” was used by pioneer women who saw the similarity between their irons and the shape of the mountains. The five main Flatirons in the Boulder area are numbered north to south along the east slope of Green Mountain.
CU Boulder’s campus spreads substantially and is a central activity, education, and research hub. It’s a short walk, bike ride, or bus trip away from downtown Boulder, which means students and visitors can enjoy the best of both worlds: the university’s vibrant academic environment and the restaurants, shops, and entertainment options that downtown Boulder offers. The proximity to downtown also allows for an easy commute between the campus and the city center.
You Can’t-Miss Pearl Street Mall
Pearl Street Mall is a central hub in downtown Boulder, known for its unique charm and vibrant atmosphere. It’s not just a market; it’s a pedestrian-friendly, four-block-long street closed to vehicle traffic, making it a bustling area filled with an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, street performers, and public art.
Here are some excellent reasons to visit Pearl Street Mall:
- Shopping: Pearl Street has boutiques selling handmade crafts and clothing to well-known brands. You can find outdoor gear, unique gifts, and fashionable clothing.

- Entertainment: Street performers are common. Magicians, musicians, and artists often entertain crowds, making your stroll an enjoyable experience. I saw a skilled guitarist who delivered a great performance when I was there.

- Scenery and Atmosphere: The flower baskets, beautiful landscaping, manicured flower beds, and the mountains, Pearl Street is more than just a shopping area. It’s a pleasure to relax, people-watch, and soak up the Boulder energy.

Boulder CO Neighborhoods
Boulder Creek
Boulder Creek is a natural waterway that runs through the heart of Boulder, including the CU Boulder campus. It’s significant because it offers many recreational opportunities, including biking, walking, and running along the Boulder Creek Path, a well-maintained trail that follows the creek for miles. You can also picnic alongside the path and go tubing in the water.
Broomfield
Broomfield is a city located approximately 15 to 20 miles southeast of CU Boulder. It’s about a 20 to 30-minute drive in normal traffic conditions. Part of the greater Denver-Boulder metropolitan area, its proximity to CU Boulder makes it a good residential area for faculty, students, and staff. It offers resources and opportunities for both Denver and Boulder.
East Boulder
East Boulder is a section of the city extending east of the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) campus. It’s known for its mix of residential areas, business parks, recreational facilities, and open spaces.
The area is also home to various businesses and industrial parks, providing employment opportunities within a short commute from the university.
One of the highlights of East Boulder is that it boasts several parks, open spaces, and trails where you can jog, bike, and picnic. It’s a great place to unwind and escape into nature.

When I was in Boulder in the fall, I stayed at the historic Hotel Boulderado. It was convenient to Pearl Street Mall and within walking distance of the city center. The historic Hotel Boulderado in the heart of downtown has 160 guest rooms and suites, three bars, and two restaurants and is a local favorite. They also have EV charging stations for guest use.
Basecamp Boulder
Basecamp Boulder is in a residential neighborhood on a main street with lots of traffic and is easy to find. A boutique hotel with a unique outdoorsy theme, Basecamp Boulder is the hotel of choice for visiting professors, prospective students, and parents. They have a rock-climbing wall, ping-pong table and beer garden. Some rooms may have kitchenettes.
Boulder University Inn
Boulder University Inn, just blocks from Pearl Street Mall, is a budget-friendly hotel and convenient for exploring the CU campus.
St Julien Hotel and Spa
St Julien Hotel & Spa, offering 201 mountain and city view rooms and six two-room suites, is Boulder’s best luxury hotel. This upscale destination is in a prime location downtown and offers a full-service spa and fine dining.
I enjoyed a lovely breakfast in their on-site restaurant, Jill’s, one morning. I finished just before the parking meters required payment. The City’s tow truck was waiting for the clock to strike at 9:00 am before starting their work.
The Bradley Boulder Inn
The Bradley Boulder Inn, rated #1 of 2 bed and breakfasts in Boulder by TripAdvisor, is in a residential neighborhood. All rooms have private baths, fireplaces, balconies, jetted tubs, and 100% cotton linens. Late afternoon wine and cheese are complimentary, and the famous Boulder breakfast is served each morning with organic coffee and tea. Cookies and baked goods are available all day.
Briar Rose

Rated #2 of 2 bed and breakfasts in Boulder by TripAdvisor is in a residential neighborhood. A chapel/shrine is on the property, and they serve an organic breakfast with fine teas and ecologically conscious hospitality.
Hotels Between One And Four Miles From The University of Colorado Boulder
Colorado Chautauqua
You can see the Flatirons from here, and there are 40 miles of Boulder’s famous hiking trails outside the front door. The accommodations are peaceful and private, in separate cottages.
There are three main areas: Missions House Lodge, Columbine Lodge, and 58 individual cottages, each with its own entrances. You can choose from studio, 1, 2, or 3-bedroom cottages with a fully equipped kitchen. You can even get groceries delivered through Instacart. Each cottage also has a screened-in front porch, some allowing pets.
There are free guest mixers, guided hikes, and history tours. All-inclusive wellness retreats are also available for individuals and groups.
When I was there, the Ranger Cottage, located at the entrance to the hiking trails, served as the Visitor Center. They will be remodeling soon and expanding. The ranger on duty shared that there are 155 miles of trails in Boulder, and most of those trails can be accessed right from this Ranger Cottage.

Embassy Suites is a trendy property with mountain views, elegant furnishings, and local curated art. Free made-to-order breakfast, drinks, and snacks are complimentary at the evening reception.

Hilton Garden Inn Boulder Is near Boulder Creek Path; jump on a bike to a Flatirons trailhead or hike nearby. The rooms boast hand-painted local artwork and a Keurig coffee maker. They offer a 24/7 business center, a bar/lounge, and an EV charging station.
Hyatt Place Boulder
Hyatt Place Boulder Is at Boulder Junction, where people live, work, and shop. A new transportation hub with rail and bus is coming to the surrounding area.

Hampton Inn & Suites Boulder-North, located in the Gunbarrel business district of North Boulder, is close to Folsom Field, national companies, and numerous government contractors and labs.
There is easy access to Longmont, the vintage town of Niwot, and Boulder attractions, including Boulder Reservoir, Estes Park, and the Flatirons. Suites are available, featuring sofa beds, ergonomic desks, and HDTV.
Boulder Twin Lakes Inn
Boulder Twin Lakes Inn, in the Gunbarrel neighborhood of Boulder Valley, is ten minutes from the city center. This modern country inn has recently been renovated in the heart of high-tech companies, adjacent to a park, trails, and the Twin Lakes.
