Blue-starBlue Star Museums is back again for military families across the nation. They’ve already kicked off their program for summer 2012 and it will run all summer until Labor Day. This year there are over 1800 hundred museums participating. This is over 200 more from last year. Even if you checked last year and there were no museums near you, I encourage you to check again. With so many new museums participating chances are high you will find one nearby. I was blown away this year by the number of places near Portland, Oregon.

When you go to a participating museum some one with an official military id must show it. The id holder and up to five family members will receive free admission. Family members can be kids, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and spouses. I love that it is flexible on how they define a family member, because my mom travels with us more often than not.

Here’s my short list of places my family is planning to go.

Auburn, NY – Schweinfurth Art Center and the Seward House Museum. I’ve actually been to the Seward house during a trip through the Finger Lakes and it was fascinating. I’m very excited to take my husband and the kids.

Buffalo, NY – Buffalo Botanical Gardens

Corning, NY – Corning Museum of Glass I’ve never been here before, but I’ve heard a lot of great things about it.

The Dalles, OR – Columbia Gorge Discovery Center

Bainbridge Island, WA – Bainbridge Island Historical Museum and Kids Discovery Museum
