After running 22 miles over two days with only 3.5 hours of sleep – in a van – it’s safe to say that I was looking forward to relaxing in the comfort of my hotel. My team of 12 mother runners piled in two vans and took on 199 miles earlier this month at the Ragnar Relay Series in Washington, D.C. It was one of the most exciting, fun and tiring running events I’ve ever done.

My running buddy Renee and I booked a room at the Embassy Suites Washington D.C. – Convention Center for after the race and we were all smiles from the moment the cab dropped us off at their door.

We ended our race in National Harbor and it was an easy 15 minute cab ride to the hotel. We didn’t rent a car so we wanted a hotel that had access to the Metro, was within walking distance to restaurants, and a quick car ride to catch our flight from Reagan National Airport back home to Atlanta. We weren’t up for sight-seeing this trip, but the hotel is only blocks away from many must-see D.C. attractions including the U.S. Mint, the Smithsonian museums, the White House and several national monuments.

The Rooms
Renee and I walked into our suite, dropped our bags and didn’t want to leave. If it wasn’t for the complimentary happy hour downstairs we wouldn’t have. Every room at the Embassy Suites is a two-room suite with a bedroom and separate living area. Score! We had plenty of space and felt comfortable – almost like we were at home – and so glad we weren’t stuck in a small, tight hotel room. After living out of a van for the previous two days it was blissful. Of course it has all of the standards – internet/wifi access, flat screen TVs, coffee-maker, etc. Ready to rest we lounged in our double beds and watched a movie, The Butler, via the hotel’s pay-per-view service.

Favorite Free Amenities
We checked into the hotel just in time for the nightly evening reception complete with drinks and appetizers. These two running moms were happy for Happy Hour. We also were excited about the free cooked-to-order breakfast. They had a full buffet with all the trimmings – we’re not talking continental breakfast here. I had a delicious omelet made just the way I like it with a side of potatoes, bacon, and fruit. Both the evening reception and the breakfast are complimentary for all guests. Yes!

The Embassy Suites was the perfect choice for our post-race hotel; and I would definitely stay there again. It would work well for trips with my family, too, and would give all four of us space to unwind in the room without being on top of each other. That’s super important for all of our sanity. The upscale, family-friendly environment is a winner for both adults and kids.
