Romance at Disney World

In 1995, my husband and I got married in an intimate ceremony at the Polynesian Resort in Walt Disney World. After countless trips to Disney with our children and extended family, we returned as a couple for our 20th anniversary. Here are some ideas for romance at Disney World.

Stay in a Room with a View

There are few things more romantic than viewing Disney fireworks from the balcony of your hotel room. Only a few Disney resorts have this option. Many rooms at Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort and the Polynesian Villa & Bungalows look out on the Magic Kingdom fireworks. However, my favorite fireworks view was from our room at the Boardwalk Villas looking toward Epcot. There is even a channel on your room’s television that plays the firework music along with the show.

Another hotel for romance at Disney World is the Animal Kingdom Lodge. You can see giraffes and zebras from your savannah-view balcony. Any view at Disney’s premiere Grand Floridian Resort is sure to inspire a little romance.

Have a Romantic Dinner for Two

While kids are welcome at all restaurants at Disney World, there are a few where you will find more adults than children.

If you love fine food and drink, there is nothing more romantic than the award-winning Victoria & Albert’s restaurant at the Grand Floridian Resort. Take your time and savor the seven-course meal in the dining room, or indulge in a culinary experience at the Chef’s Table or Queen Victoria Room.

Another romantic dining spot at Disney World is California Grill located at the top of the Contemporary Resort. Make sure and time your reservation so you can see the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the large windows that surround the restaurant.

Additional dining locations for romance at Disney World are Artist Point at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, Cítricos at the Grand Floridian, Jiko at Animal Kingdom Lodge, and the Yachtsman Steakhouse at Disney’s Yacht Club.

On our 20th anniversary trip, we had a delicious meal at the Yachtsman. Our waiter even treated us to glasses of celebratory champagne.

Tell Disney You are Celebrating

My mom made a few secret phone calls, and our hotels sprinkled pixie dust on us throughout our Disney anniversary trip.

When we arrived at the Polynesian Resort, a Disney cast member greeted us at the curb and led us inside. She presented us with anniversary buttons to wear during our visit and leis made out of real flowers and leaves. This treat was just the beginning of the surprises. Our second-floor DVC Villa room had a perfect view of the Magic Kingdom fireworks. That night we ate dinner at ‘Ohana where we had a table for two right next to the window with a view of the Electrical Water Pageant.

On our second night, we transferred to the Boardwalk Inn Villas. When we arrived at our room, there was an anniversary card from Mickey and the gang as well as chocolates and an anniversary balloon. Our room also had a perfect view of the fireworks at Epcot.

Make sure and call ahead to your Disney World hotels and restaurants to let them know about any special celebrations. You never know when a cast member may sprinkle a little pixie dust.

Add an extra touch to your romantic dinner with a special-order cake. You can choose from standard options or create a custom order. There are even cakes designed just for two! Yacht Club bakers created our cake, and our waiter delivered it to our table after our anniversary dinner at the Yachtsman Steakhouse. Cake prices begin at $25 for a non-customized cake and can be well over $100 depending on size and customization. Order a custom cake by calling 407-827-2253 at least 72 hours in advance.

Have a Professional Portrait Taken

If you are married, there is a good chance that your last portrait as a couple is from your wedding. Disney World offers many romantic backdrops for a couples portrait. Mini Portrait Sessions from Disney Fine Art Photography start at just under $200 for a 20-minute session. About 15 minutes after your photo session, your photographer will hand you a flash drive with a copyright release and images printable up to 8 x 10. We asked our photographer to recreate one of our favorite Disney wedding photos.
