Free at Parks
All weekend, get into the state parks – there are over 50 in Vermont – for hiking, biking, boating and picnicking. The daily usage fee is $4 per person over age 14, and $2 for those ages 4-13, so even if you can’t make it this weekend, you won’t have to spend a lot of enjoy Vermont’s outdoors another time.
History for Free
Vermont Days includes free entry at State Historic Sites. At the Hubbarton Battlefield, you can bring your own kite, or learn how to make one on June 11. On June 12, an open house at the Justin Smith Morrill Homestead includes free food. You can tour the house, hike the trails and explore the garden.
Fish for Free
On June 11 only, you can fish for free. Usually you have to buy a license, but on this Saturday, which is the start of bass season, anyone can fish. There is a fishing festival in Grand Isle, with fishing instruction for kids and a trout pond where kids can try their new skills.
Free Museum
If fishing is not your thing, visit the Vermont History Museum in Montpelier on June 11. Highlights include a full-size wigwam, a railroad station with a working telegraph and a WWII living room. The museum admission fee is usually $7 for adults and $5 for ages 6-17; families pay $20.
