Manhattan’s Lower East Side is one of my favorite neighborhoods to visit in New York. There is so much to see, from the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, to the outside vendors in China Town. The buildings have so much character and I can just imagine the immigrant families that once populated this neighborhood. One of those images comes alive at Guss’ Pickles.
Located at 85 Orchard Street, not far from Broome Street, this was one of the original sidewalk stands from the pickledistrict. Started in 1910 by Russian immigrant Izzy Guss, this store is still packed with pickle fans from around the world. It is no wonder he opened this store. Pickles were familiar foods for many Eastern European immigrants. If you are a movie trivia buff like me, Guss’ Pickles was the actual store location used in the movie, ‘Crossing Delancey’. Not sure if you are a pickle fan? You can try out some of the exotic flavors transported in from their Long Island location: kosher sour, half-sour, quarter-sour, new and spicy pickles, as well as fancy olives, sauerkraut and pickled green tomatoes. Believe it or not, my kids developed a love for sour pickles from our visit to the store. The current owner, Tim Baker, is a real mensch and let them sample as many flavors as they wanted. After your visit to Guss’ Pickles, you have got to soothe your sweet craving at BabyCakesNYC, a short distance away.
BabyCakes NYC is located at 248 Broome Street (between Orchard & Ludlow). Established in 2005, a safe spot for gluten-free and vegan lovers of cakes, cookies, brownies, and doughnuts. You may have already heard of this haven of all things sweet. Owner, Erin McKenna, has appeared on The Martha Stewart Show a few times. I had the opportunity to meet Erin at the World’s Largest Bake Sale (Grand Central Terminal) last month. Erin is adorable and a delight to speak with about her delicious creations. I couldn’t get enough of her Brownie Bites. A dream come true for those in search of the perfect, gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, and kosher chocolate brownie. Congrats to Erin on the release of her second cookbook this week, BabyCakes Covers the Classics, a complete cookbook of gluten-free freshness.
