When the new owners of A-Lodge (Adventure Lodge) decided to look for property in Boulder, Colorado, they had one mission in mind – to create an affordable space for people who enjoyed the outdoors to gather and stay. Their philosophy centers around three A’s: Access, Adventure, and Amenities. Just over a year ago, A-Lodge opened its doors and is a work in progress, changing and improving to meet the needs of their visitors.

Adventure Lodge is a family-friendly hotel located at the fork of Boulder Creek and Four Mile Creek, right outside of Boulder, Colorado.  It is a wonderful value for families. You can have a room to prepare meals if you like or there are fire pits and grills on the property to cook outdoors. We prepared breakfast and dinner over a fire or on one of the grills each night and ate at the picnic tables by the creek.  It was amazing!

Kids of any age will love the property and your dog can also come along on vacation.  There are only 26 rooms, so you never feel crowded. In fact, we did not see that many people and they were full!

What Works

  • The rooms have plenty of space for families.
  • There are tons of activities on the property to keep everyone busy or to just relax in the outdoors.
  • It’s pet-friendly.
  • The Boulder area is filled with tons of things to do and places to eat.
  • It’s a great place for a family or a couples get away.
  • They offer ski packages.

What Doesn’t Work

  • There’s no current dining option on the property, but a restaurant is being built.
  • Cell service is very limited and Wi-fi spotty.
  • It is on the rustic side, so may not be for everyone.

We traveled to A-Lodge after the twins were off at school and truly loved it as a couples get away. We actually drove from Omaha and it took us about eight hours. You can also fly into Denver, which is only about 30 miles away. While you can get shuttle service from the airport to Denver and then to the lodge, it probably is easiest to rent a car. Plus, having a car does give you the freedom to explore.

That said, we had all intention of having breakfast and then leaving the grounds each day, but instead found ourselves hanging out. The lodge gives you access to really the best outdoor adventures. If the kids were with us, we would have found them in the challenge course area, hiking, at the pool, or maybe even playing volleyball or board games. The possibilities are endless.

A-Lodge also just purchased a 4-wheel drive resort bus to transport guests to the local ski resort in season. There will be packages to include skiing, making it very affordable for families.

The rooms are cozy, yet very spacious with nice sized bathrooms. The owners have updated all the sheets and towels and they are so nice. Our room had two rooms. One was a big bedroom with a rocking chair and bathroom attached and the other room had a big table, kitchen on one wall, and a comfy couch. Right outside our door there was a bench and picnic table that overlooked the creek. I spent a lot of time out there!

The owners are very environmentally conscious and all products in the rooms are organic and in pumps in the shower and sinks. If you must have conditioner, bring your own. But honestly, my husband said my hair looked amazing with the products they have available, plus they smell so, so good!

The rooms range from about $120 to $250 a night, depending on the time of year and room type. For multigenerational groups, there is also a bunk room you can rent. And the sunset cabin (the most expensive room, sleeps 6 and has a full kitchen.

Right now, there is no restaurant on the property. They do serve breakfast in the office, which consists of fruit, yogurt, and granolas. They are in the process of rebuilding the restaurant and will have liquor as well.  For us, that is no big deal, as we actually enjoy preparing our own meals, but I realize this is not everyone’s idea of vacation.

I love going to the local markets, especially farmer’s markets and Boulder has a great one by the way, and picking up local ingredients and cooking them. We typically went out for lunch when we were exploring and ate at the resort the rest of the time.

A-Lodge is right up our alley as it’s a little bit luxury and a little bit rustic. It was very comfortable and there is so much to do right on the property. You can choose between the pool, hiking, climbing, biking, or taking a short walk to Fourmile Creek and the Boulder Creek Path, where you can enjoy some fly fishing, like we did.

Have you heard of Slacklining?  We hadn’t, but got to see it first hand at A-Lodge. If you’ve always wanted to try tightrope walking, but were too scared, you can now have the chance and only be two feet off the ground!  And, if you just have to have a massage after your soak in the hot tub, they offer massage therapists on-site on the weekends.

Now, the one thing that may be a drawback to some, but we loved, is that the cell service is very limited and wifi a bit spotty, except in the room or if you sit outside the office. I have to say it was heaven being pretty much unplugged for the long weekend.

A-lodge is a work in progress and although many details have been updated, the spaces are still being transformed. While the tables and chairs may seem dated, they are clean and function well. We fell in love with A-Lodge and the owners. Asa and Kris have traveled the world for adventure, but when they came back to Boulder, they decided that A-Lodge needed to be created. They have a clear vision for the resort and it was obvious to me that it is being met. It is really the best of all worlds. If you’re a skier, be sure to keep an eye out for the winter ski packages; they will be family AND budget-friendly!
