When you think of Durango Colorado, you are likely to think of fabulous skiing without all the crowds of other Colorado ski resorts. You might also think about the mining history of this small, Old West style town that is home to the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The great news is that travelers to Durango will find all those things, but the even better news is that Durango is a bit of a foodie’s paradise.
This small town of less than 20,000 inhabitants has a main street that is lined with hipster cafes, restaurants, and quaint gift shops that allow residents, local college students, and tourists to soak up the dolce vita, old west style.
One favorite foodie spot is Steamworks Brewing. Known for its beer, this brew pub offers a large menu that will appeal to the hungry skier, the finicky child, and the foodie looking for something different. Adults can sample beers like Prescribed Burn which features habanero, poblano and hatch green chiles while children enjoy a chocolate milk and a large plate of nachos that could be a meal by themselves. The decadent Six Cheese Mac (with Fontina, Gruyere, Cheddar, Asiago, Monterey Jack, and Bleu Cheese) and the Anasazi Enchiladas will tempt you and, if you are like us, force you to order both to share, because how you could not?
Another local sought after table is at the Sow’s Ear. Located in the Silverpick Lodge, about one mile from Durango Mountain Resort, this off the beaten path restaurant specializes in steak, but boasts a creative seasonal menu. Peeling a child away from the snow lined pool at Purgatory Lodge to get in the car for our evening at the Sow’s Ear was not easy, but once inside, sitting under a mobile made of old skis and ski poles, the feeling of this cozy open kitchen restaurant took over. Though we visited on a (freezing) cold mid week night before the ski season really exploded, reservations are recommended, and I can see why. Even my non steak eating eight year daughter thought the Filet Au Poive was juicy and tender.
The good news about the wide variety of fit for foodie establishments in Durango is that you can spend the next day at Durango Mountain Resort, skiing off all the calories.
