snowyroadAs winter weather bore down on the Northeast we held our weekly Twitter party to discuss Winter Travel Tips. Sponsored by Travel Guard we covered topics from unexpected weather, what to pack, and how weather has affected our plans. Read on for the recap.

DO YOU PREFER COLD WEATHER DESTINATIONS OR WARMER CLIMATES? WHY?

@teresashaw I prefer warmer climates because I live in a cold one! It’s a treat to see the sun in the winter.

@shannonentin I’m ready for winter! Love having my fireplace burning. Bummed we’re getting rain and not snow tomorrow in NJ.

@barblikos I get traveling to snow if u live in the desert. If u live in the snow, why would u want to vacation in it? Weirdos.

@CindyRichards I like it hot, baby. Hot, hot, hot! (You can keep the snow and cold.)

@TravelTipsTMOM COLD Weather. I grew up in Florida, so I am bit spoiled with the warmer climates.

@Lexis_momma I’m definitely a warm weather girl! Brrrrr it’s cold out! (and I live in AZ).

@AnujadeSilva Love spring or fall for longer trips. Prefer milder climates than extreme summer or winter.

WHAT ITEMS DO YOU PACK IN CASE UNEXPECTED WEATHER HAPPENS WHILE YOU ARE TRAVELING?

@alittlebiteof Mittens, underwear and extra socks. For the car, water and granola bars.

@TravelGuard Always good to pack these airport travel tips. http://ow.ly/rbfgy

@JodiGrundig I pack warm clothes and have an emergency kit in the car.

@TibsTravel Prepare for weather–different if road trip or air don’t you think? No matter what need at destination.

@SheBuysCars Always pack an umbrella. Cuz if we don’t, it rains!

@kymri A clear plastic rain poncho is essential to protect camera in unexpected downpours!

WOULD YOU BE DETERRED FROM ATTENDING A SKI TRIP IF A WINTER STORM WAS BEING PREDICTED? WHY OR WHY NOT?

@TheSuzieJohnson I would never ski in the first place, I tried it once and it was a disaster.

@TravelGuard A Q&A about winter storms and travel insurance: http://ow.ly/rbfLC

@DesertChica Not sure, cold is cold right? If I already agreed to a ski trip….

@TravelTipsTMOM Yes, if it’s severe enough that I could put us in danger.

@TaniaRealtor No way! Fresh winter storm snow would make it even better!!

@GeekDad248 I was once stuck on airport runway for 8 hrs because winter storm closed airport we were going to.

@BloggyMoms I think it would make it more exciting/fun!

@barblikos Seriously? You all know me well enough to know I would cancel ANYTHING if a snow storm was coming. I’m a wimp.

@AshleyNorman07 Best case scenario: Clear en route, dumping snow in the mountains!

@laborders2000 Being that I live in middle Georgia and do not see snow often, I would have to say I avoid it like the plague.

HAVE WEATHER CONDITIONS EVER AFFECTED YOUR TRAVEL? WHAT HAPPENED?

@NanaKatSF No, but that is probably because I don’t travel much when the hard winter weather begins.

@shopgurl Yes we were going to Orlando once but we heard about an upcoming hurricane and decided not to.

@kymri Oh yes. A “bunny hill” trek in the Himalayas became test of survival through 6 days nonstop rains, mudslides, landslides, floods!

@banina9 Hurricanes in the Caribbean…. we ordered room service.

@margomcd Missed a connection to Italy because of torrential rains at ATL. Missed Coliseum.

@GeekDad248 A hurricane ruined our honeymoon.

@shannonentin Crazy thunderstorm tossed our plane. Honestly thought we might crash. Had to land in Baltimore instead of Philly.

WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU LIKE TO DO IF RAIN ROLLS THROUGH ON A VACATION?

@lovernsavers Make up a scavenger hunt, offer choice of card games for the winner.

@ktj329 Also just spending good quality time with my son “trapped” in a hotel room.

@AnujadeSilva Lots of great factory tours, historical house tours & even indoor food markets can keep you dry & entertained.

@Mom4everever Sometimes those hikes in the rain are fun- especially when mom slides down the road in the mud.

@TheMomJourneys Trivial pursuit or a taste test of local food.

@CherMarsh3000 Pamper myself , get a massage , have some wine and dinner.

@FreeLikeBirdie Birdie loved that when we were in Orlando at Epcot & rained, she just ran around.

@Stephen_Radford In Texas its time to get the 4 wheelers and go mudding.

HAS TRAVEL INSURANCE HELPED WHEN BAD WEATHER STRUCK ON A VACATION?

@DesertChica Med Evac ins when traveling internationally is important if you have medical issues!

@TheDealMommy Insurance is a must for me. It’s cheap and I’ve used it twice: once for advice and once to cancel.

@travelermom Planning a cruise w/ my parents. Need 2 look at travel insurance.

@ESeattleMomma We’ve not had to use it for bad weather, but did have to use it jury duty!

@CherMarsh3000 Used it when my luggage got lost with all my items.

@AmandaBozeman I have not had this problem yet. *fingers crossed*.

@WinningEmily Our flight got canceled due to a hurricane once.. but we didn’t have insurance (lesson learned).

@dandygiveaway Never had travel insurance before. Should probably get it from now on! Scary stories on here!
