bicycling-familyWhether it’s a weekend getaway or a 10 day cruise, when we pack for a family holiday, we feel so lucky to be getting away. But what happens when something bad happens on your vacation?

In the case of Dr. Gary Feldman of Ventura, California, his travels were both unlucky and lucky. He was named Travel Guard’s “World’s Unluckiest Traveler” for an ill-fated medical mission to Vietnam. While sightseeing just days into his month-long trip, Feldman stepped to the edge of a cliff to answer nature’s call but slipped before he could zip. Feldman fell 30 feet, breaking both of his legs. Ten screws, two surgeries and a metal plate later, his tale of tumultuous travel turned lucky when he won a $10,000 dream vacation anywhere in the world and the title of “World’s Unluckiest Traveler.”

Have you been stranded? Had to cancel a trip? Nearly 200 people joined us on a rousing Oct. 25 TravelingMom Monday Twitter Party, generating 2,400 tweets and reaching more than 5 million people. Wow. It was hard to keep up, even for those of us on the party. If you missed all the fun, join us next Monday at 9 pm ET when we’ll be talking about state parks.

In the meantime, here’s a recap of all the fun on our Unluckiest Traveler TravelingMom Monday Twitter party, sponsored by Travel Guard travel insurance.

What’s the best thing that has happened to you when traveling?

@Lorraine_TLA: I got my daughter in China!

@chaotic_barb: This is going to sound really strange but being quarantined on a cruise ship with hubby for 5 days 🙂

@GaBabyMaker: Best thing would just be new memories with my kids 😉 oh, and being upgraded to a better room free 🙂

@TippyToeMom: Finding a good All You Can Eat! Lobster restaurant. Chomp Chomp Chomp!!! YUM.

@LuxuryTravelMom: Um, I got pregnant. TMI?

Yes, @LuxuryTravelMom, but you aren’t alone. @momAgenda and @Mom2LInzNoOkie said it happened to them too and @amberdegrace said it happened to her–twice.

What is the worst thing that has happened to you when traveling?

baby_in_stroller@1Dad1Kid: Pulled over and car searched by guerillas at gunpoint. I was 15. They wouldn’t let me take pictures.

@annas04: Taking 5 days to get to Washington state by bus.

@Crazycanuckblog: Traveled to France for a weeding, got lost en route, in a car accident and MISSED the wedding.

@finntannermom: They gave our rental car away Yellowstone, Labor Day weekend.

@TravelGuard I’ve got a million of ’em. How ’bout this one? http://ht.ly/2Zgws

What’s the weirdest place you’ve ever been stranded? What happened?

@ciesla504: I remember getting caught in a freak snow storm coming back from TX.

@birdbanter: Missed my train stop in Germany and was stranded in a city name of which I can’t pronounce. I shouldn’t travel alone.

@pluslily: India in Kerala because the elephants raided and destroyed the village we were staying in…and our tree house.

Do you buy travel insurance? Why or why not?

@familyonbikes: We don’t have travel insurance. Make sure we have health insurance though.

@PaulEisenberg: Too cheap to buy travel insurance. Haven’t taken a costly enough trip to warrant it lately.

Have you canceled a trip last minute? What happened?

@projecthope7: Had to cancel due to illness. Sadly had forgotten to get travel insurance.

@StuffSmart: No, but thought we were going to have to cancel going home because of 9/11.

@momtodanielle: A year ago my dog swallowed something he shouldn’t have and we had to cancel our weekend away.

What would be your $10,000 dream vacation?

@latravelgal: Bora Bora!

@BrtVacationRent: Anywhere new with my family- Galapagos, India, China, Machu Pichu are tops on the list

@misskathymae: Alaskan cruise! 11-12 days fishing!

@royaldixie: Tuscany, Rome and Venice

We have this much fun every Monday. Please join us. Next Monday at 9 pm ET, we’ll be talking about the wonders of state and national parks.
