rough_roadWe gathered together for our weekly twitter party on June 3rd to talk roadtrips. Stories were shared, tips flew fast and furious, and favorite destinations were compared. The next day the party continued on our Facebook page. Read on for the recap.

WHAT’S THE FARTHEST YOU HAVE OR WOULD ROADTRIP? WHY?

@shannonentin I’ve driven from NJ – FL, NJ – IL, NJ – UT. Plan to drive NJ to Lake Tahoe, NV next year. That will be the farthest yet!

@childmode Farthest 13 hours to Chicago but I have no problem going farther. Driving doesn’t bother us 🙂

@erodg Solo: KY to CA. Love long stretches of road by myself. Next up: Banff Icefields.

@debmomof3 Farthest have done is MI to NC to FL to GA and home, over 23 days last summer. Tons of fun, but long time on the road.

@LianneandEric We drove from DC to Disneyworld one year! 2 days of driving and it was totally worth it! 🙂

@Amanda_AKA_Mom I live in KS & once roadtripped down to New Mexico, Arizona, @Disneyland, the four corners, and back home. Was my fave trip so far!

WHAT’S THE WEIRDEST THING U HAVE SEEN ON A ROADTRIP? WHERE?

@CindyRichards Mother Jones’ grave. 1st I realized she was a real person vs. a myth and a magazine.

@Cammi1972 South Dakota.. Going to Sturgis :). Enough said..

@shannonentin World’s (unofficial) Largest Treehouse in TN. Built piecemeal from reclaimed barn wood. So awesome.

@travelermom Feral pigs along side the I-95 in SC on a recent road trip. I’d never seen them before!

@blondefabulous Santa in a Chevette w/a light up deer head made like Rudolph that lit when he tapped the brakes!

@jessica_davis4 I passed thru a small town in TX & saw inmates in striped outfits in a field banging rocks.. Literally.

WHAT’S THE PERFECT ROAD TRIP SONG?

@ionmyadventures When traveling w/ inlaws MIL plays “On the road again” everytime we get back on the road. She likes to stop a lot. Funny only once.

@MaryHeston Donna Summers I will Survive or any other 70’s disco song you can sing loud in your car.

@StuffedSuitcase I’ve never had a roadtrip that only lasted the length of one song…

@DebMomof3 Kids wanted to listen to KidzBop 22 over & over on trip last summer… I always associate those songs w/ being on the road now.

SHARE YOUR BEST “GETTING LOST” STORY.

@CindyRichards I want a GPS that says in a perky voice, “Oooo. You found a cool new way to go.”

@Amanda_AKA_Mom All I can say is that we had a GPS named Julie. The hubs didn’t appreciate Julie’s directions once. So now she’s in Tablerock Lake.

@thisgrltravels Ended up on wrong train from Paris to Avignon many years ago and ended up all the way on the Riviera!

@kimorlando Lost? What’s that. Momentarily redirected but not L O S T.

@Annahi25 GPS took us to the wrong route, and we ended up finding the best hole-in-the wall southern food place.

@CantonCathy 17 hr drive to Myrtle Beach Hubby drove entire way non stop My only job to look 4 turn off (11 pm) & I was sleeping & we missed it.

HOW DO YOUR KIDS KEEP BUSY ON A ROADTRIP?

@MaryHeston Going Old School – Give them a map & designate them “Hector the Tour Director”. My kids love being the Tour Guides.

@jazzy6178 Movies, walkman, fighting with each other.

@debbutterflys Teens keep them self occupied, little one we play highway bingo. It’s a lot of fun.

@Annahi25 I bring their CDs and play them if they get too rowdy. Better to hear Dora for the 100th time than “MOMMY” x 100.

@kimorlando We also try to find the weirdest town names – some good ones en route from CT to SC.

@lovethatmouse On our NY to FL roadtrip last Feb my 10-year old chimed up from the back, “hey! Let’s count roadkill.” Her sisters were delighted.

@shannonentin Great roadtrip game: u pick something (secret) and start counting it as you see it. Others have to guess what you are counting.

@Teronya From TN, we count cows, on your own side of the car. Most cows wins. But if you pass a graveyard, you lose your cows.

Our Facebook fans shared their tricks for keeping the kids busy.
WHERE WILL YOU ROADTRIP THIS SUMMER? WHY?

@heatheracts We’ll be heading to San Francisco because there’s so much to do and it’s pretty close by.

@CindyRichards Hope to roadtrip from Chicago to Mt. Rushmore. Dying to look up the presidents’ nose!

@NicholeMckinnon New Brunswick to see family.

@karen_dawkins OH, family wedding. AL, college. FL, the house of mouse. Savannah, girls getaway. Beach… of course! 🙂

@twokidsandamap Roadtripping to Moab, UT and possibly Mt. Rushmore.

@TibsTravel Road trip GA to OK — Trail of Tears 175th anniversary this year. Important history. Land & water. I have tips.
