Now that summer vacation’s behind us and the kids are back in school, traveling moms are planning their next trip. Why not make plans in the shoulder season, those weeks before and after peak time travel which are prime time opportunities for bargain-seeking adventurers? We’re ready to help you learn all about shoulder season travel during our next #TMOM Twitter party!

Our summer tans aren’t even fully faded, but my husband and I are counting the days to our next jaunt down the shore. Yes, I mean the Jersey shore – and yes, the season is officially over, now that Labor Day is history and the kids are all back in school. But we’ve found that the autumn – when no one is thinking “beach” or “boardwalk” – is one of the best times to come! The crowds have dwindled, the pace is slower, prices have been lowered and sunrise over the ocean is just as sweet. Even the locals are friendlier, now that they’ve reclaimed their town from the influx of tourists that dominated just last month. And better still – that house we rented for thousands a month in August? We can get that very same house for $100 a night.

We usually plan an annual trip to Disney the same way. You’ll never find us there during the summer or one of the kids’ school breaks. Instead, we plan on visiting WDW right after school starts, or in January, after the holiday rush is over.  Lodging is cheaper, dining reservations are easier to obtain, and most of the rides are simply walk-ons.

Welcome to the shoulder season – that sweet stretch of time right before or after an area’s peak season, when you can find better bargains and fewer crowds, but with most of the same appeal the area had in its peak. Right now, it’s shoulder season for many beach destinations, as well as for theme park attractions, historical destinations and any other place that is usually sold as “family friendly.” Once the kids go back to school, the crowds thin out and the prices go down!

And we at TMOM would never give a cold shoulder to travel bargains and benefits. We’re eager to share some of the secrets of shoulder season travel, so we’re dedicating our next #TMOM Twitter party to that very topic! We’ll be talking about the upside to off season travel – the bargain prices on lodging and airfare, the smaller crowd level and more personalized attention at your destinations. And, of course, we’ll chat about the down side – like do you take the kids out of school? Whatever your questions, we’ll come up with answers –and have a great time doing it. Come pop in and join in the conversation!
