As the calendar pages dwindle and our focus shifts to the holiday season, many of us have the desire to travel. Be it “over the hills and through the woods,” or “dashing through the snow,” our thoughts turn to travel, adventure and family at this special time. As the year comes to an end, we ask, “Where next?” and think about one more trip. Join our next #TMOM Twitter party and you could win one of five $100 Amazon gift cards, courtesy of our sponsor, Travel Guard insurance by AIG Travel.
Is your family making plans for holiday travel this year? If so, join the crowd….and the lines at the airport, and the traffic on the highways. According to stats from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the holiday season finds us traveling more than any other time of the year. The number of long-distance trips more than 50 miles from home increases 54 percent during the six-day Thanksgiving travel period. During the end of year holidays (Chanakuah, Christmas, Kwaanza and New Year’s) the number rises 23 percent as compared to the rest of the year.
The reasons that we travel during this time are as varied as the ornaments on our trees. As our thoughts turn to the holidays, our hearts are drawn home, as most of those traveling cite visiting family and friends as the number one reason they’re on the go during the busy holiday season. Others may take advantage of the down time at work and off time from school, traveling to a new adventure or to see a favorite old haunt dressed in its holiday best.
I remember one year, my family had gathered for Thanksgiving. It’s always a big affair for my family, with more than 40 aunts, uncles, cousins and their kids gathering. The only family we didn’t expect was my brother Tim and his clan, who live in Florida, far from our New Jersey family home. Can you imagine the joy we felt when Tim and his family walked through the front door? They drove all night and made it just in time for grace – and right before the snow started to fall.
Of course, not every holiday travel story is as magical. Airports are busy, flights overbooked, and the traffic is “terrific” only in the worst sense. So how can you manage the stress of holiday travel – and make your trip a magical memory instead? That’s what we’re talking about at our next #TMOM Twitter Party.
Another bit of magic – join the Twitter Party fun, and it might just win you a prize, courtesy of our sponsor, Travel Guard insurance by AIG Travel. #TMOM and Travel Guard are encouraging kids and parents alike to ask, #Wherenext? as the holidays approach and the year ends. And, to make travel a bit more budget-friendly, they’re offering five $100 Amazon gift cards to winners selected at random. Keep reading to get all the entry info.
