We’re counting down to summer, when it’s time to hit the road. My family loves to pile in the car and head to almost anywhere (because, after all, we make almost as many memories on the ride as we do at our destination).  This week’s #TMOM Twitter Party is all about making the most of summer road trips, and perhaps even giving back while you’re away. So plan on joining us at 9 p.m. on May 23, so we can get ready to hit the road with tips from the Traveling Moms – and have a chance of winning a special Warriors in Pink bag (with surprises inside!) courtesy of Ford Motors.

Summer approaches, and you know what that means. For the kids, it means freedom! They are no longer slaves to schedules, the school bell and homework. For me, it means it’s time to cash in some of that hard-earned vacation time and plan a little fun. And that means summer road trips!

Thinking ahead to my next road trip, I can’t help but think back on the last one I took. That was back in April, when I drove from our home in South Jersey to the Traveling Mom retreat in Orlando. I was lucky to have Ford – one of the retreat sponsors – allow me to “test drive” their midsize SUV, the Edge Titanium, on my road trip. Driving in this state-of-art vehicle, then hearing about Ford, its ideals and outreach at the retreat, reminds me of the two things I’m focusing on when planning our next road trip – safety, and giving back to the places that welcome me and my crew for our adventures.

Sure, there’s fun in the planning of any road trip. But as moms, we are always thinking about safety issues. We want our road trips to be memorable for all the right reasons. But sometimes we will encounter drivers who aren’t as alert as they should be, or aren’t in peak condition to drive. It’s not just drinking or drugs – things like pregnancy or even simply aging can affect us and the other drivers on the road. Well, thanks to Ford, we TMOMs have been there….and we’re going to share all at the next #TMOM Twitter Party.

How have we been there, you may ask? Well, as I said, Ford was one of our Traveling Mom retreat sponsors. We all learned about the affects such things as aging, pregnancy or impairment (drinking or using drugs) have on drivers. Then some of us were actually able to experience the condition, using the altered state suits that allowed the wearer to immerse herself in that “altered state.” It gave you a real idea of the challenges some people are having while they are sharing the road with you.

Of course, as important as awareness of safety is, we also believe in being aware of the world around us, and how we can capture those teachable moments in our travels. And that’s what has me thinking about giving back this summer. My family loves this country and the places we visit. I think it’s time we give back to those places in a positive and meaningful way. For example, I think our next beach visit will include time for beach clean-up and caring for the feral community that lives under the Avalon boardwalk

At the retreat, we learned that Ford Motor Company gives back by supporting the fight against breast cancer through their Warriors in Pink program. Other TMOMs are doing things like Pack with a Purpose. How will you be making a difference when you hit the road this summer? Sit back, relax and share your ideas at the next #TMOM Twitter party.

So pour yourself a lemonade and put on the flip flops as we celebrate summer together. Then make plans to hit the road – and teach your kids about giving back – at the next #TMOM Twitter party. ‘Cause summer’s here and the time is right!
