TwitterPartyHoliday travel was a hot topic during our November 4th Twitter chat. We discussed whether to drive or fly, how to make travel time family time and how to keep cool in a busy airport. Read on for our top tips and tricks for the holiday travel season.

ARE YOU TRAVELING FOR THE HOLIDAYS? WHERE? WHEN?

@sleatham1 We’re just going to Grandma’s…40 mile round trip. My daughter is going to NYC with my cousin to Macy’s parade.

@barblikos We are staying home. I love being in my own home for the holidays.

@nuttynetty27 Traveling by car to Poconos this weekend coming up to have early Thanksgiving with 80 yr old aunty.

@ConnieFoggles Yes traveling for the holidays to Kansas.

@from1mom2another Everyone is coming to us this year so I am super excited!!!

@HelloAnnaH Just to in-laws for Thanksgiving and Xmas, then Tennessee for New Years!

@LianneandEric Local stuff is the best for taking a much-needed breather! We’ll be mostly doing that this year too.

@mommylife23 I live in south Florida so heading to Georgia for Xmas is very excited! Hello cooler weather!!

ARE YOU DRIVING OR FLYING? WHY?

@utsadeli With these gas prices going lower, why not drive? Great to see the country in the car.

@kymri Do enough flying throughout year for work, prefer to stay home & welcome guests for holidays this year.

@AnujadeSilva Driving coz it’s close to us but flights are crazy unless you take most of the week off!

@HelloAnnaH Always drive. It’s so much easier to be able to stop for fun and rest, and bring back souvenirs!

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR SANITY IN AN INSANE AIRPORT?

@barblikos I think remembering to be kind to your fellow travelers. Everyone is trying to get somewhere.

@LoriLeal1 Valium helps. 😉

@allierose Try to do is stay away from the HUB airports during the holidays (if poss) or try to go late/early.

@debmomof3 Have actually never flown during the holidays – either stay home or visit family w/in driving distance.

@PaulEisenberg Started paying extra for preferred check-in, accelerated security line. Worth every penny and I don’t go beserk anymore.

@chellez437 Bring items to keep us all busy during downtime.

@MeaganShamy Head to the USO.

@kymri Keep calm, and know that it’s likely crazier for person behind counter. Be kind and patient.

@MOMishStyle PRE CHECK IN and Pack light!

@ramblingstump I find during the holidays the price you pay for a one day lounge pass becomes well worth it. Especially with weather/delays.

WHAT ARE WAYS YOU COMBINE FAMILY TIME AND TRAVEL DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON?

@Sleatham1 When we are traveling, we are chatting, laughing, singing and being crazy!

@TibsTravel Family time holiday travel – build new bonds with cousins and in-laws. Regroup and build memories.

@PaulEisenberg Catching up with kids on Amtrak last Xmas worked out. Played games, even talked.

@Cammi72 We spend Christmas Eve at grandparents farm. Huge family gathering. Kids have a program-tradition.

@Springmesweet As mom of 4, travel is only so good as the smiles and laughter. Bring out the funnies and make them all have gas?

@dipaolamomma We have a tradition of cheesy holiday songs, hot coco & car rides to look at neighborhood light displays. Very Griswoldian.

@SPN_Mom Spend time with everyone after all activities are done. Movie or a game.

HAVE YOU STARTED YOUR OWN HOLIDAY TRADITIONS/HOSTING OR DOES MOM STILL DO IT ALL?

@kymri Oh and vegetarian thanksgiving feast is our own tradition – I totally rock the tofurkey.

@barblikos I’ve been the planner for close to 20 years now.

@dipaolamomma We started our own when we moved 3000 miles from my mom. But picked up some new Italian traditions from my MIL. Like FOOD.

@MeaganShamy We’ve started a lot of our own because we do not always get to c family depending where we r stationed.

@Stephen_Radford Yes Christmas eve is at my mother in laws, we do Christmas Morning here so Santa comes and drive 3 hrs to my fam.

@ktj329 Since I moved away, we definitely have our own traditions! I like to incorporate some of my ones in too, like new pjs on xmas eve.

@Sleatham1 After my Daddy Passed last year, Christmas has become my holiday to host! We love having mom over Christmas eve!

@motherearth2000 Mom does it but we help.

@kymri Since our anniversary falls over Thanksgiving, we have done so -last year took Galapagos Cruise.

@tranquilotravel Planning 3-night Thanksgiving/Hanukkah in Breckenridge, ski lessons & rec ctr, family retreat.

@ihopeudancealot I would love to take holiday trip but as I said I do Xmas dinner so can’t get out of it.

@conniefoggles Not yet because of family and cost. One day would love to take everyone on a cruise or trip. No worries abt cooking, etc.

@PaulEisenberg Did Tgiving at WDW resort one year. Loved thin crowds but it did feel a little weird not doing traditional dinner.

@TibsTravel Holiday cruise wise option once–the year my mother died. Made sense for me to regroup emotionally.

@KimberlyAlumbau I prefer to have the holidays at home as a tradition, and travel during non busy times, less stress.

@suerodman My youngest is 9 and we are getting closer to maybe doing the holiday trip, Would love to go skiing over holidays.

@judy511 No – but have fantasy of doing when I’m a grandparent & treating everyone. Must win lottery.
