We gathered together for our weekly twitter party on 10/28 to chat all things travel and share travel tips. We talked about the best way to get a hotel deal, how to stay safe while traveling, surviving a road trip, ways to save money on a trip, and how to make family travel enjoyable. We also reminded folks to download our FREE 101 Travel Tips Ebook and to enter to win $150 from TravelingMom.com. Read on to see some of the best tips of the night.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST TIP FOR BOOKING THE RIGHT HOTEL?

@MaryHeston Check the cancellation policy The best hotel is the one that will work with you.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST TIP FOR STAYING SAFE WHEN YOU TRAVEL?

@MsAFitzy Use the buddy system and ALWAYS have a plan in case something goes wrong. Every group has to have a cellphone.

@LoriLeal1 Always be aware of your surroundings. Research the area before u choose to stay & make sure it’s in a safe neighborhood.

@cheer4bison Don’t let the staff at check-in announce your room number out loud if you are traveling alone.

@mimitravelz Arrange tours/adventures thru resort.

@LuxuryTravelMom Know where the nearest medical facility is and travel with Benadryl. DD had severe jellyfish sting reaction in Haiti.

@Saving4Jewels Best tip I got is from which is take a picture of child ever morning!!!!

@ktj329 Also write your name and cell number in sharpie on kid’s hand – and I have my son wear a bright color like yellow or orange.

@tweetthemap I keep a separate account with debit card for travel that is not linked to my main account. I leave all cards for main acct at home.

@MaryHeston When we travel we use the BoyScout motto of the buddy system.

@weekendscount We always use a door stop when traveling.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST TIP FOR A GREAT ROAD TRIP?

@suerodman Good company!

@AnujadeSilva We always have some stop overs planned! That makes it about the journey as much as the destination.

@kymri Surf racks on top of car and spare swimsuit in trunk….ya never know!

@alittlebiteof Lots of snacks and drinks, a good sense of humor, and some great tunes!

@LuxuryTravelMom Headphones.

@brandybliss1 I travel while the kids sleep so I have less stops.

@DisneyMom917 I always have AAA’s number at my finger tips.

@SheBuysCars Great road trips are all about attitude: roll with the punches, find the bright spots, laugh a lot.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST PACKING TIP?

@mimitravelz Pack neutral colors to mix & match. Add scarf to dress up.

@sweetmatcha Make a list on your Google Drive, you’ll have it for every trip!

@gigglygumballs Bring less clothes than u think you need.

@dargar7 If on the rd for more than a day pack a separate bag that contains overnight items so not to unpack luggage.

@MaryHeston Best Packing Tip: get kids to learn how to pack for themselves as early as possible. It will be a lifetime skill.

@MaryHeston Pack delicates in gallon ziploc bags – they are sturdier, pack easier, & no one touches stuff going thru security inspection.

@alittlebiteof Bring a pop-up hamper for the hotel room, especially if you are going to be doing laundry!

@Mrs_Riot1 Have a military guy do it! They KNOW how to pack so good!

WHAT’S YOUR BEST TIP FOR SAVING MONEY WHEN YOU TRAVEL?

@ahytts Research for any coupons or discounts available.

@kymri Um, I say save money when you’re NOT traveling so you can spend happily when you are!

@laydeelovewv Instead of paying expensive hotel food prices, check out the area for places with buffets or kids eat free.

@4jlessad Off season if possible – getting a condo or house to rent w/friends or family can be fun once in a while.

@travel_smith Take reusable water bottles to refill. Saves so much $$$.

@judy511 Bring museum membership cards from home.

WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO A PERFECT FAMILY VACATION?

@ramblingstump Low expectations. This way I always end up pleasantly surprised.

@MaryHeston Perfect Family Vacay is relaxed w/ extra days in case some of those days are rained out.

@lorikiddo Having everyone interested & invested in the hilarity and happenchance. Viewing old family movies sets the focus on fun.

@Flytographer Not taking on too much and building in “recharge” times. It’s a vacation after all!

@mommy3sons Don’t sweat the small stuff, just enjoy being together as a family savoring these special times.

@expattravelmom Don’t over plan! Enjoy and fall off the beaten path every so often!

@travel_smith Let the kids plan too – give them a list of possibilities and have THEM choose things they like.

@TibsTravel Perfect family vacation includes time for things too busy to do at home. Play games, etc. Simple is good.
