Did you know that May is National Hamburger Month, with National Hamburger Day on May 28? In honor of this month, the TravelingMom writers have put together a list of our favorite places to travel for a one of a kind burger in the U.S.A.! Is your favorite on the list?
It’s National Hamburger Month!
Would you ever consider travel solely for food? While food is not usually the main reason of our travels, it definitely does know how to make or break a trip. I always research food options before I leave on a trip, and I always read a burger joints reviews and recommendations before I go to eat there. Why? Because a really good burger is hard to find; if you are a hamburger fan, though, finding a really amazing one is worth the effort.
TravelingMoms’ Favorite Burger Spots:
Favorite Southern Burger
When traveling to Columbus, Georgia, our Unstoppable TravelingMom Susie Kellogg recommends the Bacon Pimiento Burger from The Black Cow. She must be pretty unstoppable to choose this burger!
“As a full time traveler and burger connoisseur, I have to tell you that the Bacon Pimiento Burger, at The Black Cow, is one of the best burgers in the country!” Dan Kellogg.
Favorite Home-style Burger
If you’re looking for simple, no fuss burger with genuine flavor, our Teaching TravelingMom Kristen Maxwell recommends the DMK Burger Bar in Chicago, Illinois.
“[DMK Burger Bar offers] a simple menu, grass fed beef (or alternatives such as turkey, lamb, and veggie), where you can choose your toppings, add some amazing fries, and enjoy the best meal of your day. We stop there every time we’re in the city! Kids love it too!”
Favorite Veggie Burger
Taking into account her family’s dietary needs is important to Triathalon TravelingMom Dana Zucker, which is why Wilson & Washburn ranks high on their list of favorite burger joints. When visiting this Omaha, Nebraska, location be sure to order the beet burger, a recommendation of her husband.
“[The Beet Burger at Wilson & Washburn] is the best veggie burger ever. Not only is it made on-site, but the house toasted peanut butter is so good, they need to jar and sell it!”
Favorite Theme Park Burger
Finding good food, let alone a table at popular theme parks, can be tricky. However, if your plans are to go to Disney, our Travel Hack TravelingMom Dia Adams recommends searching out the Kobe Burger at The Hollywood Brown Derby.
Favorite Experiential Burger
Sometimes the experience of ordering a burger can be just as fun as eating one. That’s just one of the reasons GoodNCrazy TravelingMom Carissa Rogers loves going to The Training Table in Salt Lake City, Utah. At this joint you browse the menu while sitting comfortably at your table and then phone in your orders via a corded phone in your booth. When your order is ready, the phone buzzes to signal you to pick up your order at the counter.
“[When visiting the The Training Table] stick with the regular Hickory Burger and order extra BBQ sauce to dip EVERYTHING in. It’s a rule you must order the cheese fries.”
Favorite Giant Burger
When in Texas, you go big or go home. The same goes for this macho-sized Flaming Jalapeno Burger from Chris Madrid’s in San Antonio. Our Road Warrior TravelingMom Nasreen Stump remembers “[This] thing [was] the size of my husband’s head. They melt a real slab of cheese over all their burgers, which makes them awesome!”
Favorite Drive-In Burger
Time to jump in the car and visit Retro TravelingMom Mary Moores’ favorite stop : Clyde’s Drive-in in St. Ignace, Michigan. Not only is this a full functioning drive-in where they take your order straight from your car window, they also serve fantastically greasy burgers and kids menu items that come in a car-shaped box.
“While I couldn’t eat these burgers every day, they definitely do make for a fun retro experience.”
