Becoming a Disney Vacation Club member is one of the best travel decisions we have made as a family. My husband and I honeymooned on the lagoon that is now home to Disney’s Aulani Resort and Spa so when we learned that the resort was being built, it quickly encouraged us to learn more about becoming DVC Members. After all, we had always said we wanted to have a place on Oahu someday with our children. After a great deal of research and meeting with a DVC Member Representative we realized becoming a DVC Member was the perfect choice for us. We have been members since 2011 and still get so many questions about how the whole process works.
Use Points at any Disney Resort
The most frequent comment or question we get relates to us being able to use our points. Most people think that we can only use points at the our Home Resort. When you become a DVC Member you are basically buying points to travel with each year. You can use the points at any Disney resort and are not limited to just your home property.
Pick your Home Resort Wisely
While we can use your points at any Disney Resort, it is still important to choose your DVC Home wisely. Members get 4 months booking privilege at their home resort so can book travel 11 months in advance at this resort versus 7 months at other resorts. So it makes sense here to choose the resort or location you think you will travel to the most as your home resort. When you consider which property it will be you should also think about resale value because certain resorts will draw more people than others. These were the two things we considered when we chose Disney Aulani Resort and Spa as our DVC home.
One question we had right away was if we could use our points anywhere else besides a Disney Resort. After all, we may not always want to use points at a Disney Resort. A nice bonus of a DVC membership is that points can be used at RCI properties as well. We can typically find a handful of RCI properties near our travel destination so this is a nice option to have to optimize point usage.
Travel for 50 Years
Yes, 50 years. It’s hard to believe, isn’t it?
When you purchase your points and become a Disney Vacation Club Member, you have just purchased the ability to travel with those points for fifty years. That means making Disney magic and memories as a couple, with your children, with extended family, and someday your own grandchildren.
On our first trip we met an older couple staying next to us and we got to chatting with them. They became DVC members when they first became available and they told us it was the best money they ever spent. They traveled for years as a family and were now traveling with their grown children and their grandchildren.
Determine your ROI
In the end, we looked at the return on our investment into the Disney Vacation Club and quickly realized what a savings it would provide our family. Lodging at Aulani adds up quickly; we calculated how much it would cost to stay in the room option we used to calculate the amount of points we purchased and determined how many trips it would take to pay for our membership. After three years of week-long vacations to Aulani, our membership was paid for because we would have paid that much just to stay at the resort. We looked ahead at 47 more years of travel that is already paid for with a smile.
