Belleayre Mountain is a family friendly resort located in Highmount, New York in the Catskill Forest Preserve. Visitors can downhill or cross country ski and snowboard on its 8 lifts and 55 trails, glades and parks. It has 5 lodges on different plateaus for visitors to rest and get refreshments.
Belleayre’s main attraction is its focus on learning so it is great for families with riders of different experience levels. Its lower mountain is tailor-made for beginners with rope tows and lots of trails rather than the usual one bunny hill-fits-all. It even has a daycare drop off for children aged 6 months to 6 years. The resort has a great learning zone that provides full and half day lessons, clinics, weekly classes and seasonal camps for riders of all ages.
The park also has an adaptive snowsport program for those with disabilities. In 2010 the mountain opened an Adaptive Building near its Overlook and Discovery Lodges. The building is completely handicap accessible and has ample handicap parking closeby. Students are able to exit the building right on to the snow to start their lessons.
Lessons are offered for those with cognitive and developmental disabilities as well as visual or hearing impairments and other physical disabilities through the use of adaptive skiing and riding techniques and specialized equipment: three and 4 track stand up skiing, sit down skiing using mono-ski or bi-ski devices and specialized snowboard equipment.
PRACTICAL TIP: When exiting from the park on the main exist road (49a) it can be very congested at the end of the day, hang a right on Ulster and Delaware turnpike then left on Van Loan Road to bypass some of the traffic.
