Renting a car is my least favorite task when I book family vacations. It’s so confusing – do I need car rental insurance? Why are the rates so different based upon the car size (with a larger car sometimes even cheaper than a larger car?) Should I prepay for gas? How can I get the best price? While you’ll still have to figure out some of those other questions, there are a few things you can do to find a great price on a rental car.
Sign up for alerts
On Hotwire.com for instance, you can sign up to receive an email notification if the price decreases for your selected dates and location. You need to sign up before you purchase the fare, however.
Look for price decreases
If you book a refundable car rental rate, continue to look for lower rates and rebook if necessary.
Search for the lowest rate though the company
Alamo, for instance, offers the Alamo Deal Retriever, which provides consumers with the lowest possible rates, including coupon codes, for your chosen dates and locations.
Use cash back sites
Websites like ebates.com and befrugal.com offers cash back when you rent a car at selected companies through their website.
Join the free loyalty clubs
Alamo, for example, offers 10% off their best deal for those who are members of their Alamo Insiders club. Other rental car companies also offer loyalty clubs that provide discounts and other benefits to members.
