Grand Velas pool on a digital detox vacation

Photo by Desiree Miller. The Grand Velas resort offers many ways for families to unplug, including lots of water play at a swim up pool.

You’ve heard of unplugging on vacation, but how far are you willing to take this rule?

Could you lock your phone into the hotel room’s safe?

Would you be willing to hand it over to the hotel completely—for your entire stay?

That’s the idea behind Velas Resorts’ Digital Detox program.

The idea is to inspire families to truly let go of technology while they are away.

The new Digital Detox program at Mexico’s Grand Velas Resorts in Riviera Maya and Riviera Nayarit is aimed at providing a different kind of vacation experience.

The hope is that by disconnecting from the world, visitors can reconnect with each other.

Digital Detox Concierge

To make it easier, Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit offers a Detox Concierge.

When you arrive, the concierge “cleanses” the suite by removing the flat screen television from the room, replacing it with classic board games and then whisking away all personal electronic devices (phone, laptop, iPad, PSP, etc.) to a safe.

And check out what you get in exchange:

Guests are given a bracelet that earns them access to complimentary activities, including:

  • Bike tour
  • Ecological tour of the property’s flora and fauna
  • Snorkeling tour
  • Facials and massages at one of the five best spas in Latin America

The guest has to earn a total of four activity bracelets (one for each day of the detox) to get their electronics back.

They’ll also get a t-shirt that reads: “We are digital detoxing,” and will have a timer placed in the lobby that features the family’s last name and the time that they have already detoxed.
