We Chicagoans are waiting with baited breath. Friday is the big day. What? You aren’t waiting breathlessly to find out whether Chicago gets the 2016 Olympics?
Honestly, it has been nothing but 2016 Olympics 24/7 for the last few weeks here in Chicago as we await Friday’s announcement of which city will host the Summer Games in 2016. How will we pay for it? Who will benefit? What will happen to the low-income residents who live in the neighborhood where they want to build one of the venues? Will our town’s President Barack Obama join his wife, Michelle Obama, to lobby IOC members?
I sort of forgot that the choice of a host city for the 2016 Olympics isn’t the No. 1 story in every market. I realized it yesterday when I was talking with a PR person for Park City, Utah, about my visit next week and she suggested a stop at the Olympic center there. I can’t wait to see it.
As for the 2016 Olympics, it is a somewhat controversial topic here in town where there are, predictably, naysayers. I don’t happen to be one of them. I definitely Back the Bid. Hard as I try, there’s a good chance I won’t get to see every corner of this great world of ours. Why wouldn’t I jump at the chance to have that world come to my backyard?
