Sonora Smart Dodd earned the title the “Mother of Father’s Day” for pioneering what became the national recognition of father’s that we now know as Father’s Day. The oldest of six children raised by her widowed father, Dodd’s inspiration for a day to honor fathers came in 1909 on the day that pays tribute to mothers—a Mother’s Day.
With the help of the YMCA and the Spokane Ministerial Alliance, the first official Father’s Day was held on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. The Centennial Celebration will begin Saturday, June 19, 2010.
Today Fathers’ Day is celebrated in 50 countries worldwide. For a complete history on the origin of this day, visit The Birthplace of Father’s Day web site.
