car_roadI am a mom that is always on the go.  I like to keep my kids active because it prevents us from going crazy being stuck home all day.

Our week is often filled with play dates, trips to the museum, park, zoo and the library. Getting the three of us out the door on time is often the challenge and it never fails I always forget something! I found myself getting really stressed out in the morning and on a few occasions decided that it wasn’t even worth the hassle of trying to get things packed and kids to cooperate.

There are a few things I do now in order to stay more organized and alleviate pressure from myself in the morning.  It can be very stressful and overwhelming but with some planning it can actually be lots of fun!

Here are a few of my tips that have worked for me in preparing for a day trip:

Have the car stocked

I have a medium sized canvas tote that I keep it in the back of my car stocked with necessities that we might need while we are out.  A few things that I keep in the tote;

  1. Extra diapers/underwear for the kids – you never know when you will run out or when someone might have an accident.
  2. Change of clothes – a must especially in the summer time when kids tend to get sweaty and dirty while playing outside.
  3. Sunscreen – I don’t know how many times I ran out of the house and totally forgot sunscreen for the kids.
  4. Extra hat/glasses – to protect those little heads while they are outside.
  5. Ziplock bags – These are critical for road trips and can be used for many purposes.  While at the beach they make a great place for the kids to store their new found treasure and keeps the smell locked in! They are also great for storing wet clothes or anything that might be gooey like your sunscreen or chapstick.
  6. Medical kit –this is something you should always have in your car. You never know when someone might need a Band-Aid or a cut cleaned out.
  7. Wipes – I can’t store enough wipes!
  8. Small trashbags – these make it so much easier to throw away trash then to pick it up all over the car floor.
  9. Little toys – I keep two small buckets, shovels and little cars that they can play with at the park.  They are boys so they love digging in dirt and running their cars down the sliding boards.

 Snacks / Drinks

I have a small bag that I always keep in my pantry. The night before I will throw in a few snacks for the kids so that it is ready to go in the morning.

I give each kid their own water bottle/cup that I freeze the night before. This keeps it extra cold and I just take out in the morning so its ready to go.

DVDs / Books
We have a DVD in our car {lifesaver!} so I make sure that I rotate the movies every few weeks. As soon as my 18 month old gets into the car he points to the screen and says “ON!”, can you say spoiled? But this keeps them busy and entertained, so I just make sure that they have a fresh movie to watch every so often.

I keep a few books in the car in easy reach for the boys to grab.  I also keep a travel magna doodle in the backseat and on occasion they like to draw and pass it back and forth.

These are just a few things that I do when I prepare for a day out with the kids. They probably seem like a no brainer but it took me awhile to finally get a system down and get more organized.

If you have any tips of your own that you would like to share, please let us know we would love to hear them!
