National Bike to Work Day is May 20 in NYC and though both my husband and I work from home, we plan to join New York commuters in riding around the city that day. It surprises many non-NY-ers how bicycle friendly New York has become. A bunch of high school kids from my neighborhood regularly ride their bikes the 12 miles to their Upper West Side high school. My graduating senior’s soccer career is winding down and she’s joined the bikers.
Hopstop, which provides train, bus and walking directions in cities around the country, including New York, just added biking directions. This is a great service which also includes the routes that have bike paths, and how many calories you are burning.
Bikers looking to upgrade their ride can check out the Brooklyn Bike Jumble on May 14 at The Old Stone House in Park Slope.
And you can explore a different part of the city May 15, 1-3pm, with a Trees of the Lower East Side Bike Tour, run by the Lower East Side Ecology Center.
