nanferryNantucket is one of my family’s favorite places to go on vacation, and it’s just so convenient from our home west of Boston.  We just have to drive less than two hours to the ferry terminal, get on the ferry, and an hour later we are in downtown Nantucket.  But, the prices aren’t so great – the three bedroom unit we stayed in during the Christmas Stroll is $15,000 per week during the peak season.  So how can a family enjoy this quaint island without breaking the bank?  Consider traveling off season!

Many Nantucket hotels and resorts offer special rates in the spring and the fall.  While the weather isn’t usually warm enough for the beach, it is still great to walk around town.  The Nantucket Island Resorts, which includes the popular White Elephant Hotel and Hotel Residences, offers Hot Dates, Cool Rate in the spring and the fall.  Harborview Place, where we stayed for the stroll, is also offering discounted off-season rates.  If you’d prefer a vacation home rental, availablility and prices are much better in the spring and winter.

Visiting off season is actually very nice.  My family visited in May last year, and while the weather was a little chilly, we had a great time walking around time and visiting the Whaling Museum.  Parking at the ferry terminal was very easy, and most restaurants had little to no crowds.  It’s a great way to experience the island without spending a fortune.
