Always wanted to learn to dive? Always have kids with you on vacation? Did you know you could learn as a family? Children as young as ten years old can participate in learn to dive programs. On a recent vacation to the island of Turks and Caicos I booked a “Discover Scuba Diving” package with Dive Provo.
If you’re not familiar with Turks and Caicos, it’s only 575 miles south of Miami and was recently voted the #1 Top Beach and Sun Destination in the World by Trip Advisor.
If you’re going to learn to dive, it might as well be in paradise, right?
This only took a few hours and we were ready for our pool instruction. This involves learning to breathe from the tank without freaking out. I was the only one who came close to panicking; my 10 and 11 year old dive partners were just fine. In fact they found my anxiety highly entertaining.
The next day we got to try out our mad diving skills in the open water (sort of). They only allow you to dive to a relatively shallow depth and you work from a line. See photo of me clinging to line.
You work your way down the rope one breath at a time, you can come back up at any moment and surprisingly I was less nervous in the ocean than I was in the pool.
I won’t bore you with the wonders under the sea, you’ve all seen “Finding Nemo” and “Little Mermaid”, but truly it’s as spectacular as you imagine it might be.
Sharing the experience of learning and my first dive with my children made it truly special.
When we return to Turks and Caicos this spring my kids have already asked if we’re going to dive. Who knows? I might even let go of the rope this time.
We were hosted by the Seven Stars Resort, we paid in full for all of our diving through Dive Provo. I was in no way compensated for this article or for endorsing the mad hot dive instructors from Dive Provo.
