You haven’t heard from me in awhile. I’ve been M.I.A. Ironically, right after I returned from BlogHer ’09 in Chicago, I stopped blogging. Reason being, I moved. Relocated. Left paradisiacal Southern California that very week for the simpler, more laid-back pace and beauty of Northern California. And I haven’t looked back since.
Moving was the right thing to do. I knew it the first day we arrived. My family threw my daughters and me a “Welcome Home” party, and afterward, my tween said to me, “Mom! Why didn’t we move up here sooner?” It’s been wonderful to be around family again. I’ve missed a lot of barbecues after 23 years, and I have a lot of catching up to do.
I also still have a lot of unpacking to do. Mostly books and knick-knacks. Stuff that can wait for its rightful place. What’s important is that our beds are assembled, the fridge is turned on, the DVR and Internet are hooked up and the homework desk is ready for action when my daughters return to school on Monday. Priorities.
Yesterday, I took a cruise on the nearby lake with my brother-in-law and niece. It was a sizzling hot day, and I recalled the days when I grew up in this area, how 100+ temps were the norm in the summer. After being in temperate Orange County for so long, these new numbers were going to take some getting used to. Again.
My skin sizzled and started to drip. The only thing left to do was jump into the lake. When my head bobbed to the surface, I looked around and realized I had just been baptized. Again. I was now officially a Northern Californian. I was home. Again.
