Top 5 Family Travel Tech Picks at CES

As a family travel blogger, I look for sources of new family travel tech to help make life easier, both at home and on the go. Sometimes those are tech products for parents, sometimes they are products for kids, and sometimes they are products for home. This year at CES (Consumer Electronics Show), I spent a few days in all of the pavilions scouring to find the hottest new tech products that would alleviate the chaos of life while traveling. These products are sure to keep you connected while you’re in the go or make traveling easier. Here are my top family tech travel products from CES.

1. RunPhones Wireless Bluetooth Headphones

Whether you’re looking to sleep on a red-eye flight on the plane or you’re sharing a hotel room with your kids or snoring spouse, if you need headphones, RunPhones Wireless Bluetooth Headphones are the most comfortable you can get. They stay put with the use of a stay-put, sport-style wicking headband. Because they use a flat removable speaker that lays against your ear with the headband, you don’t have an uncomfortable ear bud in your ear when you turn your head or roll over.

The RunPhones have been a game changer for me with hotel travel in the couple of weeks I have owned them. The battery lasts up to 13 hours on one charge and streams from about 30 feet away so your phone can be near you, but not right next to you.

2. Kanex GoPower Plus Premium Portable Power for iPhone and Android

I’m always on the go with two phones (an iPhone and an Android, a personal device and a review phone). I’m also always carrying a back-up battery. The GoPower Plus Premium Portable Power for iPhone and Android from Kanex is my new favorite portable back up battery. It’s an 8000mAh battery pack so it can fully charge your phone battery up to 2 times.

It also comes with a built-in micro USB and an integrated Apple Lightening adapter so you can charge either an iPhone or an Android with the built in cable. Not having to carry around cords is a plus, and the fact that this has both cables built in is a double win. It also has an extra USB port so you can charge another device if you need to charge your camera. It even allows you to charge two devices simultaneously. The Kanex GoPower Plus Premium Portable Power also features smart charging technology that provides your device with up to 2A of power for a quick charge, while the built-in surge protection feature keeps your devices safe from over charging.

3. Lima

Since I’m always on the go, access to my data and files from home is something I’m often in need of. Obviously cloud storage isn’t always the most secure option. The Lima is a new personal files storage system that lets you access your home files from anywhere. You connect Lima to your home storage (external hard drive connected to your computer).

Use the Lima to add files just like you would any other folders and the files are sent to the Lima device. Then they’re available on all of your connected devices. The files actually live on that external hard drive and Lima simply encrypts them using a military grade protocol EAS. Anytime you access the files, your devices are encrypted using an asymmetric key that only your devices have. Your authenticated devices are the only ones able to decipher the files and are authenticated during the pairing process with the Lima device and your account. Your smartphone or laptop becomes a media player, essentially, allowing you to play your music, watch a video, or read the last document you created.

4. EZVIZ Five Plus Action Camera

Looking for action video on the go? Want to take videos and still photos of all of your outdoor activities like ziplining and sailing? The EZVIZ Five Plus is similar to competitor action cams at a much better price point. It features 4k/30fps video and 720p/240fps with a 2” HD touchscreen and a waterproof case. The EZVIZ Five Plus has a wide-angle 158-degree aspherical lens and an option for Image Distortion Correction to help filter out noise and graininess. For better sound quality, the EZVIZ Five Plus actually has dual microphones to capture sound so it makes it easier to edit out sound like wind and background noise you don’t want in your finished video.

It features similar house and accessory mounts so if you own an older version of a competitor model, you can use the mounts and accessories you already have. We have numerous accessories for our older competitor and a 360 camera, so it’s nice to have some compatibility and not have to buy lots of new proprietary accessories.

5. Monster Firecracker High Definition Bluetooth Speaker

When we camp or travel for more than a couple of days, we generally take a small Bluetooth speaker with us. It’s nice to have some sound other than headphones or the laptop depending on where we are and what we’re doing. The new Firecracker High Definition Bluetooth Speaker from Monster Products is the perfect portable Bluetooth speaker for the outdoor enthusiast. Monster calls it their “Baby Blaster” and I call it super sound. Stereo sound from two full-range drivers with passive bass radiator in this little hand-held blaster gives you an unbelievable sound for the size with about 25 hours of continuous play. And for the outdoor enthusiast? It has a built-in flashlight that lasts up to 7 hours. It also comes with a heavy-duty cabinet and strap with carabiner clip so you can clip to your tent or tailgate area for easy listening.
