Few things go together better than water and music–unless you’re worried your electronics will be ruined. With my love of beach trips and water parks for summer vacation and staycations, the water resistant Shoqbox from Philips gives me confidence so I can enjoy my swim time and my music at once without having to continuously peak over and ensure my speaker is not getting wet.

Yes, it Can Survive the Water!

I was recently with Techlicious and Philips for lunch during NYC CE week and was given a mini Shoqbox as a gift. Thoughtful and functional for a mom like me who chooses a beach vacation over any other.  Philips needs no introduction in the world of electronics as the company has given moms on vacation everything from portable car DVD players for our kids to bikini trimmers and razors for us.  I have a number of Philips products but I think the Shoqbox might be my new favorite. In addition to being a wireless bluetooth speaker it also has an audio-in so you can connect it to other devices and it has a built in microphone so you can talk on the phone. Yes! it is a fully functional wireless speaker that is safe…not just at the pool but IN the pool.

ProductReviewMy Shoqbox Experience

July 4th is always a festive time at my house because it is my son’s birthday. That means food and music are plentiful and continuous into the night. The sound on the Shoqbox is clear even when sitting in the water. My guests enjoyed the crisp sound coming from this mini speaker.

If you put it under water you can’t hear the sound as well, of course, but putting it under water does not ruin the speaker. You can completely submerge this speaker without damaging it. I poured a bottle of water on it to demonstrate to my family. I LOVE IT!!!  I can float in the pool with the speaker in the water next to me. I can put this speaker on the edge of the pool and not worry about one of the kids kicking it in the pool ( or me spilling sangria on it).  It played on Friday in the sun and on Saturday in the rain.  It still works this morning.

I won’t bore you with all of the technical stuff that I learned at the Techlicious luncheon behind the amazing water resistant ability of this speaker, but here’s what I know after my party:

This speaker is completely water resistant.  You know the way some gadgets are “water proof” and it means that if they accidentally get a little wet they should be OK? Well, this speaker has a casing that can be completely submerged in water and/or stay floating on top for hours.  For now it only comes in black but I would encourage philips to make a few more colors…like white to match my bikini would be great. Just sayin’.

The sound is good. I’ve had a number of other portable speakers – not water proof – and this one sounds just as good as some of the leading bluetooth speakers. Even a bunch of 12-year-old boys danced to the music and thought it was “cool”.  So it passes the cool test because it played from a bowl of water.

You can use it with your phone. Yes I can be in the water and still talk on the phone without worrying about dropping my phone in the pool.  Score!

It has a built-in rechargeable battery. I haven’t tested the full battery life so I can’t really say how long it plays without being charged. It lasted 4 hours for our party with no problems.

Get Your Own Shoqbox

This is such a great speaker for us “water” families.  I plan to get these as gifts for my girlfriends who also love beach vacations and pool staycations. As of July 5th, 2015, you can get the Philips Shoqbox Mini for $49.99 at Amazon.com.  I hope you like it as much as I did.
