The beat goes on, even when you’re away from home, when you bring along a portable speaker. Forget about the big boom boxes of the 80s, today’s compact, bluetooth-enabled speakers make it easier than ever to get the party started at the campsite or the beach vacation rental. I got to crank up the volume on the Big Turtle Shell portable speaker when Outdoor Tech sent me one to test out.
Set the Mood with a Speaker that Travels
Music sets the mood wherever I am, whether I want relaxing background noise while I’m reading a book on the hotel balcony, cranking up a club-worthy playlist to get a pool party going at the vacation rental, or want a mellow jam for the Jacuzzi.
I wanted to find a portable speaker that delivered a big sound, yet was small enough to pack in my carry-on. Outdoor Tech gave me a couple sound options that are bluetooth equipped, meaning you just take your smartphone and start streaming your music through the speaker. No need for additional chords.
A decade ago, the sound technology revolution was the iPod docking station, which you’ll often find in hotel rooms. Bluetooth speakers allow you to ditch the dock. Your phone can stay protected in the zippered pocket of your beach bag, while the water-resistant speaker is blasting the tunes. I poured some water on it to test it out and it kept playing just fine. You could even bring it with you in the shower, or set it in the snow while you sit in the hot tub after skiing.
Control the volume through the buttons on the speaker, or up to 32 feet away, via your smartphone, tablet, or computer. A built-in microphone allows it to actually become a speaker phone if you want to take a phone call or launch SIRI. There’s also a power bank to charge up your phone or Go-Pro. That’s right, bring it along to the beach, and don’t worry about your phone dying while you’re out for the day. Sixteen hours of battery life on the speakers means the party won’t have to end any time soon.
The smaller version comes with a mount and a clip, making it just as easy to use on your hike, as on on your bike, or in your hotel room. Sounds like fun, huh?! Besides your loved ones, what are your must-have travel companions?
