Celebrate Mother’s Day with Fair Trade
In my travels as the Globetrotting Grandmom I meet moms from all over the world. Our homes, clothing, skin color and language may be different, but inside we are all the same. We are the heart of our families and we devote our lives to making a better future for our children, grandchildren and our communities. It all comes down to maternal instincts.
The second I laid eyes on my son (over 35 years ago) my maternal instincts kicked in and my focus was on meeting his needs and planning for his future. The same thing happened when his sister arrive two years later. It’s no different for moms in developing countries. In those countries, women are a driving force behind agricultural productivity but inequality keeps them from thriving.
Women produce 50% of the world’s food but own only 2% of the land. These women often face harassment, discrimination and backbreaking work without pay. Thanks to organizations like Fair Trade, moms in developing countries are seeing positive changes in their lifestyle and their communities. Fair Trade provides women with the ability to earn fair wages, a voice in the community, maternity leave, childcare and microloans to start businesses. When women are empowered good things happen.
Celebrate moms around the world this Mother’s Day by purchasing Fair Trade Certified products. Buying Fair Trade ensures that you are getting quality products for your family and the people who grow them are getting a fair deal for their hard work. Fair Trade also helps protect the environment through sustainable farming practices.
