Packing For the Beach: TravelingMom Approved Essentials
Our family has been taking yearly trips to the beach since my youngest was just a couple months old. We’ve traveled to many different beaches in the U.S and in other areas of the world. I remember, before I had kids, I would grab a towel and a good book and head to the beach. This is no longer the case! Now, a lot of preparation goes into our beach vacation. I’ve learned that having the right gear is KEY. Need help making that packing list? Don’t worry, we have a great list of TravelingMom approved beach essentials to help you prepare for a vacation with the family. Here are 10 items you will want when packing for the beach. Don’t miss #10, it’s the ONE thing you can’t forget!
1. Collapsible Folding Outdoor Utility Wagon
If you’ve ever taken a family to the beach you know how hard it can be to walk back and forth from the hotel or car with kids, coolers and beach bags! This is especially challenging if you are traveling with babies and toddlers. We’ve found that a Utility Wagon is a must-have item for families traveling to the beach. When ordering one, be sure it collapses and folds up so it won’t take up much room in your car or hotel room. It also needs to be durable and designed for the beach. We highly recommend this one from Amazon.
2. Sand Free Compact Outdoor Beach / Picnic Blanket
Let’s talk about getting setup and comfortable at the beach. This can be a challenge when traveling with babies and toddlers, but never fear, we have some great suggestions on how to make this happen.
We love the size of this beach blanket; it can accommodate the entire family. It comes with stakes to help keep it stretched out. When you have a blanket this size, you can keep your baby in one sand-free area and your older kids on a different end of the blanket. The best part is this blanket folds down and comes with its own storage bag. Think of all the other ways you can use this blanket when you travel. How about a road trip picnic?
3. Sport-Brella Portable All-Weather and Sun Umbrella
What about the ideal beach umbrella for keeping your kids protected from the sun? We love this large 8-foot canopy umbrella that has side panels. One of the obstacles I faced when taking my babies to the beach was being able to protect them from the sun and sand while they napped. The Sport-Brella will keep your skin safe and protected from over 99.5% of UVA and UVB rays! It’s also large enough so that my older kids can take a break from the sun during the day as well.
4. Scoppi Preschool Beach and Snow Shovel
What about beach toys? I really dislike the buckets that come with a million plastic sand toys that I know my kids will lose during our trip. That’s why I love these Scoppi shovels. They work as a shovel and a detachable sand sifter (try saying that 3 times fast). My kids can use both their hands and feet to shovel the sand.
5. Sand Cleaner Wipe Off Mitt
During our last beach vacation I swore off sand. Now, obviously because I’m such a beach bum I realized this was an overreaction. However, I was tired of filling up our rental car with sand each time we traveled back to our accommodation. I found these handy Sand-Off wipe off mits. They simply wipe the sand off your skin. BOOM, the unwanted sand dilemma solved!
6. Microfiber Sports & Travel Towel
Beach towels are obviously necessary; however, I do not like the idea of carrying 5 soaking wet beach towels back after a day spent playing in the ocean. Therefore I recommend these light weight, easy to travel with, microfiber beach towels. You can get them in all colors and sizes. They are mold resistant and antimicrobial. No more “wet towels” smell in your car.
7. Universal Waterproof Case
For most of us, it can be a hard choice as to whether you should take your phone to the beach. Most of us use our smartphones as our cameras. Some of us may even carry our credit cards in our phone cases. That’s why it’s important to come prepared when you take your devices to the beach.
Let’s talk about a waterproof pouch for your phone. I was first introduced to these in Costa Rica when a group of people I was kayaking with had them. They wore them like necklaces and I just knew this was something I would need to have on all my future trips. They come in super handy when visiting water parks too!
8. High-speed Charging Technology Power Bank
Our TravelingMoms highly recommend this portable charger. A long day at the beach could mean you might want to recharge at some point so you can keep taking those adorable photos and videos of the kids. I take this one everywhere I go and I recommend it to all my family and friends.
9. COMISO Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker
You can’t go to the beach without a bluetooth speaker! When I get comfortable on the beach, I want to play my favorite upbeat music and soak in the views. I personally love this speaker, and it may or may not be just because it’s rose gold! Seriously though, it’s waterproof with 24-hour playtime!
10. Portable Indoor/Outdoor Lock Box
Let’s get serious for a minute. One of the issues I face when I’m at the beach is leaving behind my personal belongs. I want to enjoy playing in the ocean with my family without looking over my shoulder constantly. I’m very cautious with my phone/wallet after having items stolen from me 3 times on vacation!
Now for the #1 item you won’t want to forget when packing for the beach. Protecting your devices is possible. Follow our tips here on how to prepare before you leave and then order one of these handy portable lock boxes that can be used at the beach or even in your hotel room. It’s nice to have peace of mind while on the beach, for this reason it’s my MUST-HAVE item!
