Going on short family hikes is a lot of fun, and they can be even better when you bring your furry friends along. However, not all breeds of dogs are known for being athletic. Luckily there are things out there that can make traveling with pets a better experience. Having a small yet spacious and comfy puppy carrier is a great idea.
Both of my sons and my husband love being outside and doing all sorts of sports. It’s not like they are out on some back country trail or climbing precipices each weekend, but they do like it way more than me. So we are often out exploring on some park, but now we have a small Shih Tzu puppy, Alpha Lady. If you know anything about this breed, you know that they’re not exactly canine athletes.
My Family’s First Experience Hiking with Dogs
My husband and son are constantly begging me to come along on one of their nature walks and for me to bring Alpha too. I love that they go out to do some sport but staying home alone isn’t always fun. So I finally said yes, but there is a little issue. My puppy is about twelve pounds, which makes her easy to carry, but it can get really tiresome after a while and can truly make any walk miserable.
This is exactly what happened to me the first time I joined the rest of my family on their hike. I loved being with them but having to carry the puppy all the time was not enjoyable. My poor arms were extremely sore.
I needed a solution and I needed it quick because we were already planning our next family hike. So almost as soon as we got back home, I got on my computer and started searching a solution. That’s how I found doggy backpacks.
Doggy Backpacks Make Hiking with Dogs Easy
Before this, I had no idea that these backpacks made to fit small dogs existed. My husband and I were huge fans of baby carriers when our sons were smaller so a doggy backpack sounded like a great idea for me.
The only problem is that a puppy isn’t the same as a baby, they move a lot more, so I was a bit worried about whether she would like it or not. Would she behave while I was carrying? I didn’t want her to jump out and hurt herself.
Luckily she loved it.
This thing is so cozy and spacious inside that she even made it her permanent bedroom. The bottom even comes with a cushion. Plus it has several zippers so I can open up her small one just to allow her to allow her head out and the larger ones to let her to jump in and out.
The bag that I got even has several outside pockets where I put all of my personal stuff, so there was no need for a separate backpack for my stuff.
The one I got is called EVA Backpack Pet Carrier by one for pets. My puppy Alpha and I recommend it.

On our Most Recent Family Hike
We went to an ecological park near Antigua Guatemala called Florencia. It has a few different trails of different lengths. There is even a small veggies plantation in it. So we spent a few hours exploring it on foot and on bike. This is one of our favorite places to visit for an outdoorsy day only 15 minutes away from home.
In short, the whole family was able to have an extremely fun adventure biking, hiking and having a small picnic.
Of course, carrying my puppy on my back is not the same as if I was walking by myself. But the backpack is extremely comfortable and my puppy is heavy enough to provide a bit of a challenge but not heavy enough to make me feel tired. In fact, I’ve learned to love hiking with dogs!
I would highly recommend these for traveling with pets.
