Lake Geneva’s Best Family Restaurant

It was an omelet I never forgot.
While visiting Simple Café in Lake Geneva, Wis. the waitress encouraged me to try one of their most popular dishes, the Mashed Potato Omelet.

My first thought was, “gross.“

Creamy mashed potato, fruitwood smoked bacon, green onion topped w/Creole hollandaise (served w/bacon garlic brussels sprouts)
It was absolutely delicious. And my kids fawned over their cheese quesadillas with a side of grilled red potatoes.
I‘ve thought about that omelet many times since then (especially when eating blah IHOP pancakes with the kids). So during an overnight trip to Lake Geneva last week, we stopped at Simple again.
Even though I had Mashed Potato Omelet on the mind, the 4-page menu lured me to try a lunch option — the Couscous Butternut Squash Brussel Sprouts Salad, with a cup of Butternut Squash soup.
The soup was creamy heaven (especially on a 2-degree January day). The salad was delicious, fresh, and healthy. While good, it was no Mashed Potato Omelet.
Still, we stop at Simple every time we are in Lake Geneva because we like the friendly service, the focus on fresh and locally grown food (it’s a great place for vegetarians), and the modern décor that includes light fixtures made of farm knick-knacks. After breakfast, we stop for a to-go treat at the adjacent bakery.
Lake Geneva is a popular getaway spot among Chicagoans, because it’s less than a 2-hour drive away. When we go to Lake Geneva, my family always stays at The Abbey Resort. We’ve stayed in both the winter and summer, (see my blog about the hotel). Summer is the more “fun” time to go, but in the winter, you get the place (and it’s indoor pool and game rooms) all to yourselves.
Plus, shorter wait times for the Mashed Potato Omelet at Simple.
The Abbey Resort provided a discounted room rate, but the opinions in this blog are strictly my own.

I could not agree more. Simple is excellent food and service. I really love that they use food grown and raised by local farms as much as they can.
