When you’re traveling with young kids, the last thing you want to do is have to get in and out of the car more than you have to. With its convenient location right across the street from the Mall of America, free shuttle from the airport, and fantastic amenities, Country Inn & Suites in Bloomington, MN is a great family hotel near Mall of America and the perfect home base for visiting the mall and its surrounding areas.
Just recently, I had the chance to visit Bloomington, Minnesota for a quick weekend business trip to explore Mall of America and the neighboring cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. While I was not able to bring my family with me on the trip, I stayed at Country Inn & Suites, an ideal hotel for when I return with my family in the future.
Other than a few minor flaws – like a disappointing breakfast selection and our room not being cleaned properly – I’d recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a family-friendly hotel near the Mall of America.

Getting to Country Inn & Suites Bloomington Mall of America
As soon as I got off my plane at the Minneapolis airport, I called Country Inn & Suites to find out how to find the shuttle to the hotel. They gave me directions to the shuttle location in the airport and asked me to call back once I had my bags so they could dispatch a shuttle.
Once I had my bags, I called to let them know, and they told me the shuttle would be there in 10-15 minutes. It took closer to 30 minutes before the shuttle arrived but I was greeted kindly and the driver helped me get my bag into the car. The ride from the airport to the hotel took just about ten minutes and as soon as we arrived, the driver retrieved my bags and I was able to check in at the front desk in just a few minutes.
When you’re ready to head back to the airport, make sure to be outside when the shuttle is scheduled to leave even if you see a shuttle sitting outside through the window. They actually have two shuttles, and I missed mine because I saw one outside and assumed it was the one I’d be taking to the airport. Luckily, the front desk quickly called their second driver, and he took me right to the hotel outside of their regularly scheduled shuttle runs.
The hotel is split into two different towers. When you check in at the front desk, make sure to ask which elevator to use to get to your room. Believe me, I learned this by experience! I ended up searching an entire tower for a room number that didn’t exist before realizing that my room was actually in the back tower, not the more obvious front one.
Traveling Mom Tip: As of May 2016, if you are staying in a room that ends with 27-43 (e.g., 327, 335, 340), you are in the back tower and will need to walk down the hallway by the pool to get to elevators that will take you to your room.
The Rooms at Country Inn & Suites Bloomington Mall of America
During our stay, we stayed in the largest of the rooms available at Country Inn & Suites – the two queen hospitality suite. The room was larger than expected, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the living area not only had a pull out sofa bed but also a full-size dining table that was perfect for eating pizza together after a fun day at Nickelodeon Universe in Mall of America. If you can afford the upgrade charge to a suite with a private bedroom, do it. I definitely thought it was worth it to have the additional space and living area.
Our bathroom was not properly cleaned when we first arrived, but the front desk team apologized and had it taken care of immediately when we called to let them know. The bathroom is connected to both the private bedroom and the main living area in the hospitality suite, which is great because no one had to go through anyone’s room to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Our room had two queen size beds in the private bedroom and a pull out sofa bed in the living room. We did not actually end up sleeping on the sofa bed, but it was comfortable enough that it would be a good option for kids to sleep on. The regular beds were soft, comfortable, and loaded up with a variety of types of pillows so you can choose one that works for you.
Room Cost: $$
When we visited in May 2016 the base cost of a standard room was $177 and our two queen hospitality suite was $241 prior to taxes.
There are a variety of rooms available from standard two queen or king guest rooms to a two queen hospitality suite that includes a private bedroom with two queen beds, a large living area, a bathroom, and a mini bar. Each room includes a free continental breakfast, free high speed Wi-Fi, and use all of the hotel’s amenities.
The Amenities at Country Inn & Suites Bloomington Mall of America
One of the best things about the hotel was that rather than just one pool, there were actually two pools and a hot tub in the pool area so neither pool was crowded at any time that we were there. Outside of the hotel there is also a little sitting area and a fire pit that would be perfect for sitting around and enjoying a cool evening with your family.
The hotel offers a free hot continental breakfast every morning; however, the selection and quality of hot food was highly disappointing. We ate there the first morning of the trip and decided to skip it on day two and three in favor of a more appetizing quick service breakfast in the Mall of America instead. It is a free breakfast though and a way to save some money if you’re traveling with kids and don’t want to spend extra on breakfast. I’d just recommend sticking to the cold options like cereal, yogurt, and fruit.
Traveling Mom Tip: If you do decide to eat the breakfast, I recommend going down before you get ready for the day for the best selection. We got ready and went to breakfast after, about 30 minutes before it closed, and there wasn’t much left to choose from.
Dining at Country Inn & Suites Bloomington Mall of America
The only food available inside the hotel is the continental breakfast in the morning and snacks and drinks to purchase at the front desk. There are, however, three full-service restaurants— TGIFriday’s, IHOP, and Chevy’s in the same parking lot, within walking distance.
There are also a number of pizza places, including Dominoes, that will deliver pizza right to your hotel room door. And if none of those options work for your family, The Mall of America right across the street is full of both full-service and quick-service dining options.
