Willard Intercontinental Washington D.C. is a fantastic base for visiting the city. Centrally located, just two blocks from the White House and National Mall and close to other major attractions, it offers luxury, charm, and sophistication. Ideal for business travelers, it also appeals to anyone looking for upscale amenities, great food, and an old world elegance. It is very popular year-round but especially during the Cherry Blossom Festival.
I was very lucky that I was able to secure a room in Willard Intercontinental Washington D.C. for one night during the peak of Cherry Blossom in Washington D.C. Since Friday and Saturday were solid booked, I had to settle for a Sunday to Monday stay.
This upscale hotel was out of my price range so I used my Chase Intercontinental Credit Card anniversary night. In essence, I paid $49 (card’s annual fee) for a room that otherwise would cost around $400 per night.

What Works for Families at Willard Intercontinental Washington
I prefer location over luxury but in this case I scored both. Located on Pennsylvania Avenue just two blocks from White House, Willard InterContinental Washington offers an easy access to the best parts of the district.
National Mall with its world class museums and national landmarks is within 15 minute walk. One of the major attractions there is Smithsonian museums which include the Natural History Museum and 18 other museums, galleries, and zoo. The Mall is also a popular gathering place to picnic and attend outdoor festivals.
The moment I walked in, I was overpowered by the beauty of the lobby and outstanding flower arrangements. This hotel could be a destination on its own just to tour its interior. You can spend long time walking around and admiring every detail of its design.
Rooms follow the old charm theme of the hotel. They are nicely appointed, very clean, and the beds are comfortable. The bathrooms are high end with all of the fixtures. They come with robes and slippers.
The adjacent bistro, Café du Parc provides outdoor dining and French cuisine. In addition, the Round Robin Bar offers cocktails, the Peacock Alley prepares a light menu, and afternoon tea can be enjoyed at The Terrace.
After a long day of enjoying cherry blossoms, I decided to eat outside at Café du Parc. I was not very hungry. I ordered an appetizer and expected it to be tiny – it was a French café after all! To my surprise, it turned out to be a meal. It consisted of two thick slices of pâté, colorful pickled veggies, two different kinds of salami, smoked pork, some fancy mustards, and variety of toasted breads. It was delicious but I could not eat it all.
What was left, I took to my room for breakfast. It worked perfectly, since my plan was to get up at 4 a.m./ to take pictures of cherry trees at sunrise. This meal was $18.00 which I found inexpensive for the amount and quality of food.

From the moment of checking in to the late check out, the service was outstanding.
What Does Not for Families at Willard Intercontinental Washington
This hotel if definitely not for every budget. Rates per night are high and parking is also costly, but this is what you would expect at the prime location combined with an overall class of the hotel.
Willard Washington, although very appealing to adults, does not offer a pool for children to enjoy.
No outside area for children to play
Hotel’s location works perfectly for visiting Washington’s attractions but there are no outside areas for children to play.
