It’s always fun to discover a great getaway spot – especially when it’s in your own backyard. Not literally, but for a quick 50 minute ride from the heart of downtown Atlanta you can enjoy the loveliness of Lake Lanier Islands Resort. This spring my sister, Nicole, and two of our girlfriends enjoyed a fun girls getaway there when we spent the night at the lodge for the Zooma Atlanta Half Marathon.

Four of us stayed in a double queen room that was spacious enough for four female runners – and all of our stuff. We had race outfits, shoes, snacks – enough stuff to stay for days and never felt crowded. The resort has 287 rooms and 16 suites; and has some of the best bathrooms I’ve experienced at this affordable price point. The oversized bathroom boasts custom Italian tile, beautiful granite countertops and an inviting walk in shower. It was blissful, especially after the race. The rooms also features high thread count linens, outdoor patios or terraces, flat screen TVs, complimentary wireless internet and much more.

Other amenities of this charming resort include two dining options – we had our pre-race dinner at Bullfrogs (the sweet potato “lily pads” waffle fries were amazing); a spa, a heated outdoor pool and the conference/meeting space. The resort is nestled on the shores of Lake Sidney Lanier which has a host of fun activiites for couples, families, or anyone to enjoy like golf, horseback riding, walking trails, camping, boating and their beach and water park – LanierWorld. While we didn’t get to play in the water park this trip, I have splashed in the wave pool, conqurered the water slides and even canoed on the lake in previous visits. This trip we simply relaxed before our run and enjoyed some of the most beautiful views I witnessed during a race.

The resort operates year-round and in the winter is home to the world’s largest holiday light extravaganza, Magical Nights of Lights. For more information about Lake Lanier Islands, visit www.lakelanierislands.com.

Until next time, I’m off and running …
