Elephant Seal Colony at Piedras Blancas near San Simeon.

There are several scenic spots along California’s coast, and San Simeon hosts a popular favorite.  From mid-March to mid-September, the Piedras Blancas beach is home to a rookery of Northern eleephant seals who come ashore to molt, breed, and give birth.  It’s the perfect stop for a road trip along California’s Pacific Coast Highway – there is no admission fee and no reservations are required. The beach is located a few miles north of Hearst Castle in San Simeon, and provides an excellent opportunity for viewing and photographing California’s marine wildlife.
