Located high in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, Mt. Washington Valley is a year round vacation destination for families.  In winter, visitors ski, skate, and snowmobile.  Those who visit in the autumn experience New England’s scenic fall foliage, while summer vacationers will find park upon lake upon trail to explore.

This region also boasts several cultural experiences and historic sites. Perhaps best of all, even the shopping is free–at least there is no sales tax to pay.

The following are nine free attractions in the Mt. Washington Valley area, most of which would be best enjoyed during the summer months.

1. Settlers’ Green Outlet Village Plus Kids can play on the playground equipment while adults shop at the more than 50 tax-free outlets.  Located on Route 16 in North Conway in the heart of the shopping district.

2. North Conway Community Center Swings and sprinkler fountain make for a fun summer afternoon.  Next door is Schouler Park – good for kite flying or picnicking. Both located on Route 16 in North Conway Village.

3. Arts Jubilee Free concerts are offered on select evenings during July and August.  Family-friendly music and picnic atmosphere.

4. Nature Trails Take a nature walk on the trails at Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center or Wildcat Mountain.  Take Route 16 past Pinkham Notch Visitor Center to access both trails.

5. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Watch as crisp apples are dipped into caramel and then rolled in a topping of your choice.  Then stick around to see how fudge is made.  Free samples every day.  Located on Route 16/White Mountain Hwy in North Conway.

6. Conway Scenic Railroad; See the trains arrive and visit the train museum to learn more about this mode of transportation and New England’s railroading history.

7. Mt. Washington Hotel Tours of this grand hotel are given at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.  Learn about the history of this hotel and about the formation of the world monetary fund.

8. The Appalachian Mountain Club Offering free clinics and lectures at both Pinkham Notch and the new Highland Center at Crawford Notch.
