Smithsonian Museum DayFall is not only back to school, it is back to culture. Museums often schedule blockbuster exhibits to coincide with the fall cultural season. And September 27 is the annual Museum Day Live! offering free admission to museums around the country.

If you are in New York, you can pop into the Children’s Museum of Manhattan or The Morgan Library & Museum. And although the Museum of Modern Art has free Friday nights, on this Saturday you can spend the whole day, and splurge on a meal at the museum’s signature restaurant, The Modern.

Check out the art at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon or the environmental exhibits at  World Forestry Center Discovery Museum, also in Portland.

In Key West, Florida, institutions free on September 28 include the  Key West Lighthouse and Keeper’s Quarters Museum and the Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden.

If you are in Alaska, tour the  Alaska State Museum in Juneau or the Sitka Historical Society Museum.

The only requirement for the Smithsonian Museum Day is that you register in advance for an admission card, good for up to two people. And you can only get one admission card per household.

Free admission is limited to general admission, and excludes parking or special ticketed exhibits.

Note: some museums, like Smithsonian institutions, always offer free admission, but they participate in Museum Day Live! To get the most from your free day, research admission prices and choose one of the more expensive museums to get your free money’s worth.
