Chicago O’Hare may be the busiest airport over Thanksgiving along with Los Angeles International, according to a recent report released by Orbitz, but we here at TravelingMoms have found it also to be a great airport to spend extra time in. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays here, Chicago O’Hare will become a bit nuts, especially the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after. So we want to help you make O’Hare a bit less scary. In fact, many of us TravelingMoms make O’Hare our connecting airport, simply because of all its benefits.
Empty Nest TravelingMom, Cindy Richards, has found many hidden treasures at O’Hare and wrote about Five Things You Didn’t About O’Hare. I agree with her that one of my favorites honestly is the self cleaning toilets; huge bonus!
Exploring airports can tell you a lot about the city it is in as well. Make sure you just don’t put your head down and get worked up about having to travel on these busy days. Keep your head up and take Cindy’s recommendation to check out the art work and if you have a longer layover, venture to other terminals. But beware, she does also remind us that the airport has awesome shopping.
Suburban TravelingMom, Jamie Bartosch, recently shared with us her discovery of the newly opened Yoga Room at O’Hare . The yoga room is located in Rotunda 3 on the Mezzanine level. Jamie shares with us how wonderful it is to have this additional space as a traveler, especially for families with children. The practice of yoga is a wonderful stress reducer and can calm and relax the entire body and is a whole lot of fun, too.
I personally try to connect through Chicago O’Hare whenever I need a connection. I have found many great things I love about it, including that if I get stuck, there is a wonderful Hilton right there and as a Hilton Diamond member, I can always get a room. But, let’s not talk about getting stuck…my top three favorite things to do at O’Hare are eat, drink, and visit the Urban Garden.
The airport has dining options for everyone, including my family with varying tastes. The bars are not your typical airport bars with sports playing and lots of yelling, although there is that option if it’s your preference. But, you can find great places just to sit, relax, and enjoy. The Urban Garden, located next to the Yoga Room Jamie wrote about, is also a great retreat, especially if you have not been outside all day due to travel.
So, before you get all soured faced and upset about traveling through the busiest airport on the busiest day of the year, check out why we love Chicago O’Hare and make your day and holiday travel oh, so much better.
Happy Thanksgiving travel to all!
