La La Anthony isn’t content just being a radio and television personality, New York Times best-selling author, businesswoman and actress; she is also a mom, and the Residence Inn by Marriott’s 2016 Resident Mom of the Year.

LaLa, married to New York Knicks basketball star Carmelo Anthony, is the mother of Kiyan, age 9. Oh, and she’s gorgeous and incredibly nice.

Throughout her career, La La has often celebrated holidays on the road with her family, and she developed  La La’s Lists, a series of curated grocery delivery lists exclusive to Residence Inn, to help other family with celebrations away from home. The full kitchens at Residence Inn by Marriott make family travel homier.

I got chance to meet La La and ask her a few questions about the new partnership with Residence Inn by Marriott.

1. As Residence Inn Mom you have unveiled curated grocery lists exclusive for Residence Inn guests to pair with the brand’s free grocery delivery service to make celebrating on the road easier. How are your heritage and tastes reflected in these?

Both my parents are Puerto Rican so Puerto Rican cuisine has always been an important part of my life. For my grocery list for Residence Inn guests I incorporated  two of my favorites: my mini beef empanadas and caramel flan. They remind me of home, and I think it’s always nice to take a little piece of home with you when you’re on the road.

2. What are your must pack items when traveling?

Sunglasses, a book, my iPad, a pen and notebook, lots of iPhone cables. I pack at least three chargers… in case one of us leaves one somewhere!

3. How have your traveling habits changed with a child? What do you do differently now?

I’m definitely more selective now with what I pack when we travel, than I was before I had Kiyan. I like to play out what I’m going to wear each day and then only pack a few alternative pieces. I do the same for Kiyan. That way, not only are you only packing the things you need, so saving space, you also don’t have to spend time while you’re traveling trying to figure out what to wear each day.

4. Do you have travel “rules?”

Our rule is always to put Kiyan first. No matter what, we always make sure we’re not sacrificing anything he needs to take him on the road. School work is a big priority.

5. What 5 songs are on your travel playlist right now?

  1. Can’t Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake (puts me in the mood for summer!)
  2. Work by Drake and Rihanna
  3. Hold Up by Beyonce
  4. No Problem by Chance the Rapper
  5. Oui by Jeremiah

6. What location/destination has pleasantly surprised you the most?

Curacao was so beautiful and unexpected! I hadn’t heard much about the place before I visited. I went there to shoot a movie late last year and was just blown away by how beautiful it was. I’d love to go back and spend more time there with the family.

7. Can you share a story about a trip that was, let’s say, less than perfect?

I’ve never lost my passport or anything, but we’ve had baggage go missing before. That’s the worst. I always put a copy of my itinerary in my luggage; just in case it ends up somewhere else, the airline has our contact information. I also take photos of all my luggage before we put it on the plane so if it gets lost we have a record of what everything looks like. Thankfully it doesn’t happen often, but there’s always the chance, so it’s better to be prepared.

The Residence Inn Mom award, now in its sixth year, highlights the commitment to celebrating moms and making  family travel easier. Residence Inn by Marriott offers free hot breakfast and Wi-Fi; fitness centers; pools and complimentary grocery delivery service. The suites, all with full kitchens, give families the opportunity to spread out on vacation.
