Keeping Kosher on Vacation

Fall is the time of year when Jews celebrate major holidays and often reconnect with their Judaism. For Jews who keep Kosher, when newly observant or life-long adherents, travel can be challenging.

Then there is Passover, in the spring, when even many non-observant Jews avoid bread and other leavened products.

Some Jews choose to just keep Kosher at home, while others seek out Kosher restaurants and Kosher hotels to help them remain observant while on vacation.

The Hyatt Regency Minneapolis just added a new Kosher catering kitchen. The kitchen can be used for Kosher events like bar mitzvahs and weddings. (If you go to Hyatt and book at this hotel, Traveling Mom will receive a referral fee.)

The New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge not only has a kosher kitchen, it also has Sabbath locks on guest room doors. This means that observant Jews can honor their day of rest, but still have a locked hotel room.

New York also has many Kosher restaurants, including Ben’s Kosher Deli, with a branch in Boca Raton, and the new gourmet French bistro, Chagall.

In Los Angeles, The Wilshire Crest Hotel is even within the bounds of the Los Angeles Community Eruv. The hotel, between Beverly Hills and West Hollywood offers a free Kosher breakfast, and is within walking distance of several Kosher restaurants and synagogues.

The Crowne Plaza Chicago Metro Hotel also has a Kosher restaurant, MetroKlub.

And of course, you can go to Israel. So what are you waiting for?
