Candice1How often has a traveler compromised on nutritious foods in the name of convenience?

Or, how often has a parent been dismayed that their child was old enough to read all of the cholesterol-laden items on the kiddie menu?

Thankfully, now parents have one more ally in the fight against junk food!

Hyatt Hotels & Resorts and 12 yr old Chef Haile Thomas recently launched the “For Kids, By Kids” menu.

This is a healthy-fied menu filled with kid favorites makes the healthy choice easy, and keeps with Hyatt’s philosophy Food. Thoughtfully Sourced. Carefully Served.

Candice3Healthy people have more fun! Many children in the United States are overweight or obese…that isn’t fun!

Do you know what? Hyatt took sodas OFF the kids menu. Kids can order milk…and get free refills!

And? Kids also have the option of ordering a half portion off the regular menu at half the price.

Haile Thomas, of the online cooking show, Kids Can Cook, worked with Hyatt’s team to make sure that the kids menu meets standards for nutrition and quality and is also FUN!

Travelingmom.com was invited to sample some of the healthy and delicious new breakfast items on the For Kids By Kids menu.

We tasted Top Your Own Taco, a whole wheat tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, cheese and fun toppings, whole grain French Toast, and whole grain pancakes with agave syrup or fruit sauces.

Kids today enjoy items with which they can interact (something I clued in to early on to trick my toddler into actually eating).  So these new menu offerings present a creative way for kids to engage with their food.

Candice2My 8-year-old took very seriously the task of selecting and applying toppings to his whole grain French toast.

Meanwhile, the 5-year-old thought sprinkling granola on top of things was just the ticket!

Are you inspired now? Hyatt is having a contest called the For Kids By Kids Family Cook-Off .

Families share their favorite breakfast recipe for a chance to win a stay at a Hyatt Hotel or Resort.

Share your recipe and a photo on facebook/Hyatt by July 31, 2013. The winning recipe will also earn a place on the For Kids By Kids Menu!

My 8-year-old was hoping that the prize was “to live in the hotel”. I suggested that to Hyatt. They just chuckled. But I think that means we will be back.
