Part of the reason we love to travel is to taste new food. There is something to be said about smelling the fish when you walk into a food market like St. Lawrence Market in Toronto or tasting currywurst for the first time on a street corner in Frankfurt. Whether you love to explore new dishes when you travel or try new cuisines at home, Lonely Planet’s new book, The Food Book: A Journey through the Great Cuisines of the World, is sure to get your taste buds excited.
The Food Book, to be released on November 15, is a packed with stunning food and destination photography and profiles of culinary traditions from 40 countries all over the globe including Europe, the Middle East, Asia, North America, Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa. Sections of the book explore each country’s essential produce, signature dishes and for those who really devour the culture just as much as the food itself, it includes details on how dishes are prepared and eaten and how locals celebrate with food.
It also includes the best specialties to try (and what types of food to avoid) as well as classic recipes to try at home.
The Food Book profiles France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Hungary, Russia, Georgia, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Iran, India, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Guatemala, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Ethiopia, South Africa, Mozambique and Ghana.
Do you love to take photos of meals while on the road?
To celebrate the launch of The Food Book, Lonely Planet is hosting a ‘World Eats’ Instagram competition. Between November 5 and December 17, 2013, anyone who adds the hashtag #lpworldeats and @lonelyplanet to their Instagram photo will be entered into the competition.
Lonely Planet also asks that participants in the Instagram competition include a geographic location and basic description of the meal. The photo will be displayed on the World Eats website, where all photos can be perused and voted on. Six weekly winners will be chosen to have their photos posted on the LP Instagram channel and will receive a copy of The Food Book. One grand-prize winner, selected from the six weekly winners, will receive $250 worth of Lonely Planet books of their choice.
Is it possible to have your cake and eat it, too? I couldn’t resist.
In all seriousness, if you have family or friends who love food and travel, The Food Book might be a great gift idea. It’s 888 pages of deliciousness and it’s going on my wish list!
