Sometimes even the best laid travel plans can go awry. Baggage can be lost, injuries can happen, and trips can be cancelled. All of these things are out of our control, but what if there was a way to limit the inconvenience you would experience if any of these things happened? Wouldn’t that be worth it?

Peace of Mind is one of the Reasons Our Family Decided to Buy Travel Insurance

Our family has traveled for fifteen years and visited close to twenty countries. We’ve had a few bumps and bruises along the way, but thankfully there was nothing major. Recently, however, I decided to take an international road trip with my boys alone. Call me crazy, but I thought it would be fun, and since my husband has limited vacation time, he wasn’t able to join us. There was one thing we wanted to check before I left – whether or not we needed travel insurance.

I picked up the phone and called Allianz Insurance. I have other friends who have used them, so it seemed like a good place to start. Right off the bat, they were open to my numerous questions. What do they cover? Do my kids need insurance? How long does the policy last? I was rapid fire with my questions and don’t even remember all of them, but I know I was thorough. In the end, I purchased an annual travel plan to cover our family. Here’s why:

5 Reasons Our Family Finally Decided to Buy Travel Insurance

1. Peace of mind

As a mom, I like to know my family is taken care of when we travel. Travel insurance covers many things, from lost bags to rental car damage to emergency medical coverage. When traveling internationally, it’s quite possible your regular insurance won’t cover medical care. This is something I would recommend checking with your healthcare provider before traveling. We’re also entering a stage in our lives when our parents are getting older and the possibility of us needing to change travel for them is a reality. Knowing that Allianz will cover any medical emergencies, from dental issues to medical evacuations, makes me rest easier when planning our travels.

2. We travel A LOT

Between my husband and myself, we probably take 20 trips each a year. Some of those are together as a family and some are on our own, but having travel insurance will help with travel hiccups along the way. If our bags are lost, Allianz comes to the rescue. We could miss our flight connections, and if that happens, Allianz can help. If travel plans are disrupted or changed, Allianz can help as well. Having travel insurance just makes sense for us.

3. It’s one less thing to worry about

We have experienced our share of travel nightmares along the way, but nothing beats the story of my friend and her lost luggage. Her family of four traveled to Venice and her bags never arrived. They spent four days of their vacation fighting with the airlines about who was going to pay for it, who was going to find their bags, where the bags were, etc. They wore the same clothes, shoes, bought the bare minimum for toiletries, and were miserable. It was a complete nightmare. They did not have Allianz Insurance, but I told her about their baggage delay that gives reimbursement for clothes, toiletries, and other essential items if luggage is delayed for more than 24 hours. She more than met the requirements for this and her story reinforced my decision to invest in a travel insurance policy.

4. We love a good adventure

As a mom of three boys, it just comes with the territory that we have a lot of adventures on our trips. We love to go white water rafting, zip lining, hiking, and do anything outdoors. In doing so, we probably increase the odds that we could get injured. We don’t seek out these activities, but we do like being active. When I’m with my kids exploring the world, it makes me feel better to know that we’re covered if anything should go wrong.

5. It doesn’t cost that much

Each policy is different and you’ll need to reach out to Allianz to get a quote, but my policy was around $200 annually for each individual. When I think about all the things this covers, I feel this is very reasonable. I didn’t even mention the fact that it covers lost documents (such as passports), natural disasters, and even strikes (by airlines, buses, and such). The security this policy gives me far outweighs the cost.
