Things to Do in Kauai With Kids

You’ve done your research and you’ve decided to book a family trip to Kauai.  It’s a great decision!  There’s something for all family members to enjoy in Kauai, including the youngest members.  I’ve been to Kauai twice, first when I was single and then married with a child who was not quite one year old at the time.  And I had a wonderful time both times.

Exploring Kauai With Kids

There are several things to do in Kauai, depending on the age of the child(ren) with you. Fun for all ages –  begin with renting a car and driving around the island to see all the natural wonders that Kauai has to offer.

TravelingMom Tip: Many people don’t realize that Kauai has its own version of the Grand Canyon, Waimea Canyon. Don’t miss it!

The island itself isn’t very big, so it’s easy to navigate by car, even with younger children. Stop and explore the Kilauea Lighthouse.

Hawaii is known for its waterfalls. One of the highlights on our last trip was stopping off near Wailua Falls and taking pictures.

One of the other things to do in Kauai is take a sunset cruise.  A sunset cruise is a lot of fun, not to mention it’s amazing to see in person the sun set over the ocean.

Traveling Mom Tip:  Wait until your child is a little bit older to take a sunset cruise  Because my son wasn’t quite a year old at the time, he did get a bit antsy.  Additionally, because we were on a boat on the ocean, he wasn’t able to explore as much as he’d like.

Other Excursions, Including Kauai Hiking

Exploring the island by car isn’t the only thing to do in Kauai with kids.  For the more adventurous (and older) members of the family, there are plenty of activities to enjoy in Kauai. A short list would include kayaking, ziplining, horseback riding, taking an ATV tour, hiking and my personal favorite, taking a helicopter tour of the island.  Certain areas of the island can not be accessed by car, and taking a helicopter tour is a great way to see everything that the island has to offer. The Napali Coast is also a must see when vacationing in Kauai.

Kauai Resorts – Where to Stay?

Kauai is mostly comprised of three main areas:  the South Shore, the East Coast, and the North Shore. Each area has a plethora of options when it comes to lodging, including resort residences.  Resort residences are a great option for families, especially when you consider all the amenities they include, like a kitchen and laundry facilities.

Kauai Restaurants:  Local Specialities

Family friendly restaurants are plentiful on the island of Kauai, including a Duke’s restaurant. Duke’s has a very casual and relaxed atmosphere. They’re known for a delicious dessert called the Hula Pie that’s worth trying, and big enough for family members to share.  Other specialties to try include Hawaiian shave ice.

When in Kauai, and Hawaii in general, luaus are also fun for families to experience.  I’ve been to two different luaus in Kauai:  Luau Kalamaku at Kilohana Plantation and the Grand Hyatt Luau.  I enjoyed both experiences, although the Luau at the Hyatt was more low key while the Luau Kalamaku was more of an elaborate performance.  My son especially enjoyed the music at the Grand Hyatt Luau.
