In New England, nothing screams summer more than a trip to McCoy Stadium for a Pawtucket Red Sox game. If you are looking for an inexpensive day out, taking the family to a PawSox game is a sure bet for some family fun! From the excitement of the baseball game to the fun promos going on throughout the game, your family will have a blast at McCoy. Make it a summer tradition for your family!
I am a born and raised Bostonian and around here, we take our sports very seriously. I have gone to hundreds of Boston Red Sox games over the years. To be honest, it’s quite expensive for a family of four (or more) to go to a Red Sox game in the city. Between the high ticket prices, expensive concessions and the parking cost, it’s at least a $200 day. Ouch. That is one of the reasons that I love the Pawtucket Red Sox, or as well call them around here, the PawSox, so much. Going to a PawSox game is an inexpensive day out for the family. Pawtucket is located in northern Rhode Island, just over the Massachusetts border so it’s relatively close to Boston (less than an hour south of the city).
Why the PawSox is a Better Option for an Inexpensive Day Out
A Pawsox game delivers a truly fun, family-friendly experience. McCoy Stadium is clean and the tickets are really cheap! An adult general admission ticket will only cost you $9 and a child’s ticket is only $6. For the price of one ticket at Fenway Park in Boston, you can take your entire family to see the PawSox!!
A hot dog at McCoy will only cost you $5.50 and an ice cream bar is only $2.50. Plus they have lots of gluten free food options. I think the concession prices are extremely reasonable.
The best part? Free parking! Yes, there is free parking at McCoy Stadium. There are some nearby businesses that charge $5 to park on their premises, but I wouldn’t recommend paying. The PawSox games almost never sell out, so you shouldn’t hit much traffic getting out of the parking lot at the stadium when the game lets out.
It’s More Than Just Baseball
Throughout the entire game, there are fun themes and promos going on. The PawSox team are constantly pulling fans down on to the field. Sometimes it’s to play a game, sing or even race the mascots in between innings. It’s lots of fun to see what’s going to happen in between the innings. Who knows, if you go to the game you might even get called to field to participate in a 3-legged race or to sing a silly song to the audience.
See Future Red Sox Players
Many Boston Red Sox players got their start in Pawtucket and lots have played there while they recovered from injuries. Here are just a few of the many greats who have played games for the PawSox: Nomar Garciaparra, Manny Ramírez, Jim Rice and Jacoby Ellsbury! Big Papi (David Ortiz) even played a few games for the Pawtucket Red Sox. It’s fun to go to a PawSox game because you just never know who you will get to see.
One thing that has always impressed me about the PawSox is how involved they are in the community in Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts. At any given game, you are likely to see a Boy Scout troop, work outings and at least one child who is there to celebrate their birthday.
My family was at a PawSox game recently because my youngest son, who is nine, earned an incentive at school. He was recognized by the Pawtucket Red Sox for his achievement at school and was rewarded with an opportunity to go out onto the field before the game started because of his good work at school. What a wonderful incentive for the kids.
They Light Up the Sky
On Saturday nights, the Pawtucket Red Sox light up the sky with a fantastic fireworks display. The fireworks can be seen from the seats inside the ballpark or they can be seen from the parking lot outside. On certain nights, they play a musical theme to accompany the fireworks. Imagine how fun it is to watch an amazing fireworks display set to music by New Kids on the Block, Taylor Swift or the Star Wars soundtrack. It’s awesome!
They also put on a fireworks show for July 4th. If you are in the area, be sure to stop by and see it. They really do put on a great display.
Fans of the Boston Red Sox fan who live in southeastern Massachusetts or anywhere in Rhode Island, will surely enjoy a PawSox baseball game. If you’re on the hunt for ideas for an inexpensive day out, consider making a PawSox game a summer tradition for your family.
