A day of service is how many choose to honor Martin Luther King Jr. on the January holiday that bears his name. Since 1987, one of the other highlights of Martin Luther King Day in Chicago has been a performance by the Chicago Sinfonietta.
This unique classical orchestra adheres to the musical motto, “excellence through diversity”. Considered the country’s most diverse orchestra, it honors the work of composers of color and women, while still paying tribute to time honored classics. The goal is to make classical music available to everyone.
Dr. King’s life and legacy inspire this annual concert tribute. This year’s concert includes a multi-media masterpiece. Orchestra music is combined with cutting-edge visuals and audio from one of King’s most visionary speeches — the “Mountaintop” — given only hours before his death.
The Annual Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, at Wentz Concert Hall of North Central College in suburban Naperville, an hour west of Chicago; and at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, January 20, at Orchestra Hall of Symphony Center. It’s an inspirational family-friendly event that reminds all of us that although the physical dies, ideas live on forever.
